Wednesday 21 March 2012
The 2012 London Olympics offer specific market opportunities for hospitality and tourism businesses. However, these firms know little about how to prepare for this once in a lifetime mega event in order to maximize commercial benefits.
For the past two years the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has been engaged in a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Elliott Marketing & PR, one of the leading marketing agencies in the leisure, hospitality and tourism sector. This partnership has involved researching, analysing, strategizing and implementing advanced business processes and skills to assist the Company to enter the tourism industry and develop it competitively going forward.
In this seminar the project’s Market Analyst, Ian Lacey, will discuss the objectives and outcomes of the project and, in particular, talk about how the London Olympics was used as a launch platform for developing further tourism knowledge and expertise in the Company. Findings from a qualitative study drawing upon the experiences of restaurant owners, destination marketers and other tourism professionals in Vancouver, host city of the 2010 Winter Olympics, will be presented. The unique strategies currently being developed by Elliott Marketing & PR for hospitality and tourism businesses in order for them to exploit the business opportunities presented by the Olympics will be discussed.

Surrey Think Tank
Thursday 13 June 2013
The Surrey Tourism Research Centre in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is proud to announce a one-day think tank on Reconceptualising Visiting Friends & Relatives (VFR) Travel. VFR constitutes a major component of travel and tourism flows, and one that is being significantly reshaped by changes in migration and mobility patterns, transport and communication technologies, and cultural shifts. Despite the importance of this topic, researchers have paid only intermittent, and largely ad hoc, attention to it. The Surrey Tourism Research Centre is therefore holding a think tank to explore the meaning, changing nature and implications of VFR travel.
International Critical Tourism Studies Conference V
Tuesday 25 June 2013
Building on the success of four preceding editions (Dubrovnik 2005, Split 2007, Zadar 2009, Cardiff 2011), the CTS conference series continues in 2013 in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This city, famous for its cultural and religious diversity as well as for its dynamic revitalisation after the fall of Yugoslavia, is rapidly profiling itself as an international tourism destination – as such it is a very suitable, stimulating environment for discussing a critical turn in tourism research, education and action. The conference will be co-hosted by the University of Surrey, London Metropolitan University, Cardiff Metropolitan University and Institute for Tourism Zagreb.
