Surrey researchers put social tourism on the map

Friday 4 November 2011

On Wednesday 26th of October 2011 the second NET-STaR seminar was held in London. NET-STaR, the Network for Social Tourism and Regeneration, is led by Dr Lynn Minnaert and Dr Graham Miller of the University of Surrey and Professor Robert Maitland of the University of Westminster. The seminar focused on the potential role of social tourism in policy development. Mr Paul Maynard, MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, opened the seminar with insights into the work of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Tourism. Four academic speakers, two from the UK, one from Belgium and one from Ireland, then offered different perspectives on social tourism and policy.

The seminar was attended by 41 delegates from five different European countries. The audience included academics, research students and practitioners. Lively discussions were held on the position of tourism in social and economic regeneration policies, and mechanisms to put social tourism on the policy map.

The next NET-STaR seminar will be held on 21st February in Bradford. For further information about the seminar series please contact Lynn Minnaert.
