Surrey has an outstanding reputation for innovative tourism research based on the theoretical depth, empirical rigour and originality of our work. In addressing key tourism challenges in the modern world, the Centre takes pride in shaping academic debates, policy making and tourism practices. We value interdisciplinarity, collaborating with researchers from the social, natural and physical sciences.

  • Global Ranking: top ranked European centre in the 2009 IJHR global rankings of tourism research
  • Research evaluation: In the 2008 national research assessment (RAE), virtually all the Surrey Business and Management submission was considered to be ‘internationally recognized’, while 60% of activities were ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’. Tourism researchers were especially commended for their "world-leading research outputs’, strong postgraduate group, and international esteem.
  • Funding: almost £2 million in the last decade: Economic and Social Research Council, Leverhulme Trust, the EU, UNWTO, ITCA and government departments.
  • Editorships of leading journals: Annals of Tourism Research;  Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Education; Tourism and Hospitality Research;Tourism Geographies (Associate Editor), and membership of 24 editorial boards
  • Postgraduates: more than 20 PhD candidates, and more than 100 Masters students.
