Biography

Karen graduated from the London School of Economics in 1998 with BSc in Social Policy and Sociology. The following summer she obtained an MSc from the University of Surrey in Social Research Methods. Her PhD is from the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at University College London. Karen joined the University of Surrey as a lecturer in 2007. Before that she worked in the research directorate at the Home Office. She primarily conducts research in the fields of policing and crime reduction and her teaching reflects these areas of expertise.    

Research Interests

Karen’s research interests coalesce around aspects of contemporary policing and crime prevention theory and practice, most recently on contemporary forms of community policing, intelligence-led policing and on the impact of the 1998 Human Rights Act on the police service. She is currently writing a book – ‘Citizens, Community and Crime Control’ – examining the forms and functions of citizen and community involvement in policing with a focus on the development and institutionalisation of forms of volunteering
