Project description

Analysing sleep and activities in the Time Use Survey

This research project focuses on patterns of time use in post-industrial Britain and tries to understand the ways paid employment affects other domains of everyday life. The main research objective of the thesis is to assess to what extent and in what ways occupational circumstances and other time constraints of British workers affect their sleep, leisure pursuits and social engagement. A specific focus is given to the ways working time arrangements and the long hours culture influence workers' lifestyle. The thesis attempts to introduce new analytical categories of time poverty and to examine neglected forms of temporal disadvantage. the project makes use of the latest UK time use surveys that provide detailed information on the sequence, nature and duration of everyday activities.
