NVivo 9 Follow-up Working 9 November 2011 (Sociology - CAQDAS)

Wednesday 9 November 2011

10.00am to 17.00
TBC

Registration: 10a.m., Course start time 10.30a.m.
Presenters: TBC
This workshop is designed for those who have been working on a real project using NVivo 9 for some time. Most participants will have previously attended an Introductory Workshop, although this is not a pre-requisite. The aim is to move participants on from the basic tasks of setting up a project and coding data. This is not a repeat of aspects covered in the Introductory Workshop and it is assumed that participants have a basic working knowledge of the software. Rather, this workshop covers more advanced tasks including query functions, model tool and data representation and reporting functions. The exact content of each follow-up workshop depends on the needs of the individual participants attending, and we enquire about progress and specific issues ahead of time to plan accordingly. Participants are encouraged to bring work-in-progress along to the workshop (either on a laptop or memory stick). The workshop is accompanied by intermediate/advanced documentation.

Mixed Methods using MAXQDA

Friday 19 October 2012

9am to 3pm
Prof. Udo Kuckartz, University of Marburg Dr Christina Silver, CAQDAS Networking Project Graham Hughes, Qualitative Innovations in CAQDAS

Over the last decade, mixed methods approaches have become more and more popular all around the world. These approaches have been adopted in different disciplines like sociology, anthropology, education, general medicine, etc. However, confusing terms are often used. For instance: What is the difference between mixed methods, triangulation, data integration, and data combination? The workshop will try to clarify this subject and focusses on the characteristics of the different methodologies. It starts with an orienting overview and then discusses how mixed methods approaches can be realized using MAXQDA.

Managing Literature with NVivo 10

Wednesday 6 February 2013

10am to 4.30pm
Ann Lewins, Qualitative Data Analysis Services (QDAS)

Many universities and research institutions have site licences for NVivo 10.  Nvivo10 can be used to assist with the analysis of qualitative data. However one of the difficult challenges of long term research projects, in any discipline, is associated with keeping track of literature.  Used creatively and systematically NVivo can help you manage the processes of cross referencing and accessing the literature material that is supporting your research.

This event is administered by Day Courses in Social Research. Fees vary according to your institution and role. Please see information on Fees before booking to ensure you apply for a place at the correct rate.

Dr Christina Silver (CAQDAS Networking Project) has been using and training in ATLAS.ti for many years, and brings her knowledge about other CAQDAS applications to her thinking about the use of ATLAS.ti.

Together, Susanne and Christina will discuss a range of issues relating to the role of ATLAS.ti, broadly in terms of analysis methods, and also specifically in terms of particular uses.

This seminar is supported by the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM).

The overall emphasis is on the management of textual forms of data although discussion concerning basic handling of different multimedia types can be included if required by participants. The workshop focuses on ways to organise both the data and the project itself. We code the data, create memo's which centralise thematic work and writing, create networks which allow us to explore and visually express themes, our ideas about them and their connections with other issues We aim to encourage the effective use of some of the most important tools available in the software. Overview demonstrations and discussions provide a longer term sense of direction.

During day one sample data is used to enable the group to focus on the same tasks at the same time - to experiment with tools without it 'mattering'. During the second day participants create a software project for their own studies using relevant research materials.

The course will suit those who are complete beginners and those who have looked at the software and tried to use it in a limited extent. However you should have some idea about what your approach to qualitative data analysis will be. The course does not teach you 'how to do' qualitative data analysis per se.
