This one day workshop provides a general overview to the core functionality of MAXQDA focusing on the early stages of getting started efficiently and providing a longer-term view of the potential of the software in supporting qualitative and mixed methods analysis.
MAXQDA 10, developed by Verbi Software, is a CAQDAS package which integrates the handling of textual data with quantitative and multimedia forms of information/data, providing powerful coding, annotating, retrieving and analyzing functions.
The one-day workshop uses sample data in order to become familiar with tools and functions, following through common tasks as a group and practicing exercises as individuals. Work is structured to provide step-by-step support for commonly used early software tools, with others demonstrated to illustrate longer-term potential.
The course will suit those who are complete beginners and those who have looked at the software and tried to use it in a limited extent. However you should have some idea about what your approach to qualitative data analysis will be. The course does not teach you 'how to do' qualitative data analysis per se. The workshop is accompanied by fully step-by-step documentation and is led by an expert user of MAXQDA who has been working with and training in qualitative software packages for many years.
Pre-requisites: No prior experience of the software is required, although participants will benefit from having explored the MAXQDA website before attending this workshop.
Outcomes: at the end of the workshop participants will have a general overview of the principles of MAXQDA and analytic potentialities for its use. They will be confident in the early tasks of setting up projects and preparing data for use with the software, and in the initial analytic tasks of qualitative coding, note taking and basic content-based explorations. They will have a sense of longer-term direction and potentials offered by the more in-depth use of tools, including data interrogation and visualisation.
Documentation: this workshop is accompanied by step-by-step handouts for the tasks covered during the day, along with sources for additional support and lists of online resources.
This is a CAQDAS Networking Project event.
