This course provides an introduction to the methods involved in organising and conducting focus groups. The course is divided into two sections. The first section explores how and when to use focus groups in social research. Topics covered include planning for focus groups, developing focus group schedules and moderating focus groups. The second section provides participants with an opportunity to either facilitate or be a member of a focus group discussion.
This course is intended to provide a practical introduction to focus groups for researchers who have little or no experience of running them.
(Please note this course will not cover analysis of focus group data. For courses covering the analysis of focus group data please see Advanced Methods in Focus Groups or Analysis of Qualitative Data.)
