The course is aimed at researchers who are beginning to assume greater responsibility for managing research projects. The course will identify the issues and problems which invariably arise when developing and conducting a research project. Topics to be covered include:
• Commissioning research and preparing a tender or grant application
• Negotiating a contract
• Risk and stakeholder analysis
• Scheduling, resource management and project planning tools
• Managing the fieldwork and data analysis
• Disseminating results
• Ethics, confidentiality, copyright and data protection
As former Head of the Home Office Research and Planning Unit and Professor of Social Research, University of Surrey, Roger Tarling has considerable experience of all aspects of research management. He is author of Managing Social Research: A Practical Guide, published by Routledge in 2006, and serves as the essential text for the course.
