Criminology and Sociology

Crime and deviance have become a central part of modern society, with growing numbers of people held in custody every year, issues of crime and crime control regularly at the top of the political agenda, and the police increasingly under public scrutiny. The impacts of crime on society are also widespread, from direct impacts on individual citizens, to more diffuse effects on wider society.

Our Criminology and Sociology degree will develop your understanding of the key concepts, theories and principles of both criminology and sociology, and their application across a range of relevant substantive areas. Through the use of a range of analytical tools, you will develop the skills to evaluate and conduct research on contemporary social problems relating to crime, deviance and social control. The course includes a focus on police and policing, prisons and prisoners, youth crime, crime and the media, the criminal justice system, and criminological theories.

"I especially enjoy the criminological modules; some of the more contemporary issues we cover really challenge me to question my assumptions about crime, criminals and the justice system."
