Media Studies

In the media-saturated world of the twenty-first century, wars are won and lost on television, celebrities seem more familiar to us than our neighbours, the global economy is increasingly based on the exchange of information, and communities and identities mirror popular cultures from sport to popular music.

Our Media Studies programme explores these processes of mass communication and builds your analytical and investigative skills, enhances your media literacy and teaches you the key creative and technical skills required for working with modern mass media.

"I chose Surrey not only for the course but for its beautiful campus. What I loved about the course was the freedom to choose modules within it. Although Media Studies can be seen as a fairly broad degree, we were given freedom to choose our own path within it...

I did journalism over each of the three years and ultimately gained a job from it... I am now on the graduate scheme at Hearst magazines, which I wouldn't have got without help from Surrey. It is a great job, which offers regular promotions within a company I can be proud to be part of."
