Sociology, Culture and Media
During the twentieth century, media such as television, radio, cinema, music, newspapers and magazines became ever more central to everyday life. The recent digitalisation of established media and the generation of new technologies such as the Internet and mobile phones promise to have an even greater impact upon the cultural fabric of everyday life in the twenty-first century.
Our Sociology, Culture and Media degree provides a specialist examination of media and culture integrated with an invaluable grounding in the more general study of contemporary societies. We cover established media such as newspapers, magazines and radio as well as new developments including iPods, the internet, digital television and mobile phones. The course includes a focus on culture, including topics such as youth culture, fashion, popular music and art. You will also have the chance to study a range of areas of broader sociology, from questions about class, gender, ethnicity and sexuality, to the sociology of childhood, youth, education, health, work or deviance.

"Upon my first visit to the University Of Surrey on the open day, I instantly fell in love with the place... I chose Sociology, Culture and Media as it provided great versatility and flexibility. The university’s renowned placement schemes and high employment rates also influenced my decision.
I worked as a Marketing Executive for a software company in Guildford during my placement year... Previous work experience and my participation with various societies, including writing for the university newspaper “The Stag”, helped me to achieve success in getting the placement.
My time at Surrey has provided me with invaluable experience gained during my placement year, transferable skills gained from my course and interpersonal skills through interacting with peers and staff. Together with drive, motivation and enthusiasm, I have been able to acquire a managerial job role straight out of university..."
