The IoSR, in conjunction with the University of Surrey's Electronic Engineering Dept, was ranked 1st in the University and 2nd in the country in the electrical & electronic engineering category of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

The Institute of Sound Recording (IoSR) is part of the Department of Music & Sound Recording (MSR), in the Faculty of Arts & Human Sciences (FAHS), at the University of Surrey. It is responsible for world-class research in audio-related subject areas, and offers postgraduate research-based MPhil and PhD programmes, as well as being home to the world-famous Tonmeister™ BMus undergraduate degree course in Music & Sound Recording.

The Institute works very closely with the Music side of the Department, and shares undergraduate taught music modules and also performance and practice facilities. All performances organised by the Department are recorded by Tonmeister students. The Institute also has close ties with the Departments of Electronic Engineering and of Psychology.
