Facilities
The Department has extensive professional facilities housed in the purpose-built Performing Arts Technology Studios (PATS) which were opened in 1988. These include:
- three professional recording studios and associated control rooms
- a mobile recording unit
- an extensive range of professional microphones
- four digital audio editing suites
- a listening room with surround monitoring equipped to the highest international specification (ITU-R BS 1116)
- an Audio and Electronics Laboratory for practical work
- a good range of electronic and acoustic test equipment
- twelve practice rooms with pianos
- a Steinway concert grand piano, a fortepiano, a harpsichord, a portable electronic organ, and a comprehensive set of percussion instruments
- two student multimedia computing rooms housing a number of networked Macintosh computers running Cubase, Logic, Sibelius, Reaktor, Max/MSP, CSound, etc
- a well-stocked audio room with scores, records, cassettes, CDs and playback
equipment (located in the nearby University Library).
