Biography

My background is in aerospace structures and mechanisms, and my activities span from academic research & teaching to consultancy for industry, covering both theoretical work and experimental activity. My areas of expertise are spacecraft structural design, analysis and testing and in particular structural dynamics.

Graduated with a first class honour degree in Aerospace Engineering my career started as a stress analyst at Alenia Spazio (Turin I), I then worked at ESA-ESTEC (Noodrwijk NL) and in 1995 I moved to Southampton (UK) where I carried out a PhD on Microvibrations of Spacecraft Structures and later obtained a lectureship in Aerospace Structural Dynamics. I progressed through my academic career becoming Head of the Astronautics Research Group and I was awarded a personal Chair in Aerospace Structural Design.

In 2013 I moved to the Surrey Space Centre, to take up the Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Space Engineering co-sponsored by Surrey Satellite Technology (EADS)

Research Interests

Currently I carry out research in the area of microvibrations on board spacecraft, multifunctional spacecraft structures, correlation between FEM and testing, response of electronic packaging subjected to harsh vibration environment. My top priority will be to strengthen the collaboration between the Surrey Space Centre and SSTL to create new synergies and ensure a seamless relation between the research carried out in the Centre and the practical applications pursued by SSTL.
