Biography

Hi,

I'm Karen Collar and I've been the Administrator for the Surrey Space Centre (SSC) since August 2002.  Prior to joining SSC, I spent 6 years in the Registry here at the University of Surrey.  I am responsible for providing support to Prof Sir Martin Sweeting (Director), Dr Craig Underwood (Deputy Director) and to all the Academics, RA's and PhD students in the Surrey Space Centre

Departmental Duties

My duties are many and varied and if you apply for a PhD with us, your Application will come via me before being disseminated onto the relevant Academic for comment.  I administer all offers and will be your first point of contact as a new starter and will be on hand to help you all the way through to the completion of your PhD and arranging your Viva before finally attending your Degree Ceremony at the Cathedral!

We offer full-time, part-time or collaborative degrees by research leading to the qualification of PhD. A formal application form is now available at:

When submitting your application form you should also enclose the following:

* One page describing in as much details as possible what research you wish to do and why. This will enable us to arrange for you to be considered by the most suitable members of staff in the department.

* Full transcript of marks of your first degree, including a copy of the certificate of completion and transcripts to date of your MSc if applicable.

Please indicate on your form 2 referees, ideally one from your undergraduate degree and one from your MSc if applicable, we will contact them on your behalf.

It is our standard procedure to register all new research students as PhD Probationers for 13 months (full-time) or 26 months (part-time).  After this period, a Transfer Examination process takes place, this Transfer is subject to the submission of a short report and oral, and on satisfactory completion of this, allows you to proceed to the second year of the PhD. The minimum duration for an PhD research programme, undertaken on a full-time basis, is three years. The official start dates for research students are 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October each year, and applications must be received well in advance of these dates.
