On the 30th of March, 2011, THE Careers Day provided students for the 2nd time with the opportunity to connect with representatives from over 25 influential tourism, hospitality and events organisations. The range offered luxury hotels, as well as food and beverage companies to overseas volunteer placement organisations along with events and travel recruitment firms.

For the first time this year, a CV workshop was added to the programme. Since last year it had been already very popular, so that when the booking was opened this year, it was soon clear that another one was required to be organised. As last year, the event also offered career talks, a career fair, one-on-one CV consultations and a networking reception. Key note speeches presented an insightful look into THE sectors and provided relevant advice to the future leaders of the industry. “THE Careers Day underlines Surrey's reputation of developing the most employable talents at the UK's number one Hospitality and Tourism School” said Sammy Li, STES Director of Industry and Alumni Relations.

The event was attended by over 300 students from the University of Surrey and neighbouring institutions. Exhibitors were “impressed by the overall calibre of the student candidates”, articulated by Carl Smith, Recruitment Manager at Four Seasons London at Park Lane. Katie Sullivan, Recruitment Manager at Mitchell and Butler’s supported this accolade, underlining that “the mix of students attending THE Careers day at the University of Surrey was a perfect target audience for any company operating within the hospitality industry and wishing to recruit a high quality graduate.”

The visiting companies were equally impressed by the student-run event. Sarah Gouges, Human Resources and Training Manager at COMO Hotels and Resorts stated that “THE Careers Day was very professionally organised from planning the day through to the event’s execution”. Joanna Herbert, Recruitment Manager at Four Seasons considered THE Careers Day an “exceptionally well organized event, showcasing the abilities of Hospitality and Tourism students, at University of Surrey.”

Once again, THE Careers Day has proved to be a success and the organising team of STES, together with all its supporters, is looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the new School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Surrey in 2012!
