MA in Public Service Interpreting

Our new MA in Public Service Interpreting will fill a gap in academic interpreter training throughout the UK. Postgraduate interpreting programmes have generally focused on conference interpreting for international business and supra-national institutions such as the EU and the UN. However, recent migration movements have led to a burgeoning demand for interpreting in intra-social settings, including healthcare services, courts and police, immigration offices, local community and social welfare centres. In the UK, this type of interpreting has become known as public service interpreting (PSI).
The new programme will be devoted to the requirements and complexities of PSI, with a focus on the wide range of relevant legal settings. It will cover the principles of interpreting, the professional background for public services interpreting and provide opportunities for language-pair specific interpreting practice. As a special feature, the programme will also pay attention to the new and emerging forms of 'remote' interpreting via telephone and videoconference, to which public service providers increasingly resort (in order to cope with the costs for interpreting but also to facilitate medical aid or speed up judicial proceedings).
