Equipping you with a combination of specific retail industry knowledge and essential business management skills, this comprehensive programme provides you with a thorough education in the art and science of retailing, from food to fashion, consumer goods to financial services.

Programme overview

Retailing is a dynamic industry, comprising a vast variety of sectors and home to some of the world’s biggest companies. Our Business and Retail Management programme cultivates the skills you need to kick­start your career as a retail business specialist.

Our Business and Retail Management programme was one of the first of its kind when it was introduced in 1989 and remains at the forefront of the sector.

Along with the core business and management topics around which the programme is based, you will study specialist modules that develop your understanding of the working realities of retail management and operations.

You will learn to apply and evaluate appropriate techniques and frameworks that lie at the heart of successful retailing, while a range of optional modules gives you the opportunity to specialise in areas of particular interest to you and your career.

The programme includes study tours to retail stores and warehouses, guest lectures by senior retail managers and regular visits from senior-­level alumni now working in the retail industry.

This keeps our programme up-­to-­date and ensures that your education is as relevant and applicable to real-­world business situations as possible.

The MBus

Our MBus programme offers highly academic students a direct route to a Masters qualification by extending your BSc for a further year.

Graduates of the programme will be able to meld theory and its application in the real world and are therefore likely to be highly attractive to employers as future strategic leaders and senior managers.

Programme structure

Year 1 (FHEQ Level 4)

In Year 1, all of the modules are compulsory. They will enable you to develop fundamental and retail­-specific management skills and knowledge.

A compulsory module, fundamental to management, such as Business Communication Skills, looks at a wide range of communication channels at work and how we interact with people and organisations effectively using modern technology. 

A retail­-specific compulsory module facilitates your understanding of the fundamentals of retail activity.

Year 2 (FHEQ Level 5)

In Years 2 and 3, you will study a combination of compulsory modules based on fundamental management topics, such as consumer behaviour and business strategy, and retail management­ specific topics such as managing retail locations and retail buying.

You will be able to choose from a wide selection of optional modules based on a variety of management topics, including marketing, entrepreneurship, finance and international trade.

The graduate employment market increasingly demands the highest qualifications and the ability to hit the ground running when taking up a new position. At Surrey, we have responded to this demand by creating our new MBus qualification.

Working under the personal supervision of top Surrey Business School staff, the MBus offers you a stimulating intellectual challenge, alongside exposure to real business issues.

Thanks to Surrey Business School’s location in the vibrant economy of the South East and its commitment to business engagement, there are abundant opportunities to be involved in a variety of diverse real­life projects in the local area and beyond.

During the MBus year you will, in addition to taking advanced classes, undertake a substantial piece of applied research, demonstrating your ability to put theory into practice and providing you with a showcase project to impress future employers.

A further advantage of the MBus is that you graduate in June, giving you a head­start in the postgraduate job market where graduation is normally in October. It also makes you more experienced and better qualified than Bachelors students graduating in  June.

You can apply directly for the full MBus programme or transfer into it during your BSc studies ­ providing you achieve high grades in your key modules. Either way, the MBus is covered by the student loan scheme – potentially saving you thousands of pounds you may have to spend upfront on a separate Masters degree.

As with our Bachelors degrees, the MBus also offers you the chance to study abroad in your second year and undertake a Professional Training placement in your third year.

Surrey Business School is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Association of MBAs (AMBA). The School is also a member of the Academy of Marketing.

Teaching and assessment

Each of our modules is designed to involve 150 hours of student work. This time will be spent in lectures, laboratories and tutorials, and includes private study on your own or in small study groups.

You will also write essays and assignments that draw on your understanding of a particular area.

Our staff members are innovative in delivering engaging learning sessions that bring together theory and practice for your intellectual and professional development.

The following represents an indicative estimate of how you can expect your time to be split on this programme, based on the information available at the time of publication (February 2016):

  • 5 per cent personal tutorial/small group teaching
  • 4 per cent medium group teaching
  • 12 per cent large group teaching
  • 79 per cent studying and revising in your own time

Career opportunities

There is great demand for our Business and Retail Management students.

Thanks to a degree programme that examines the most up­-to­-date issues in retail commerce, ample opportunities to learn from and interact with ‘real’ retail practitioners and the work experience gained during the Professional Training placement year, many of our students have undertaken successful careers within the retail sector.

Our graduates are working in areas ranging from marketing and PR, buying and merchandising, and consumer analysis to supply chain, store operations and location planning.

Others have gone into banking, accounting and consulting. Overall, graduates of this degree have proven to be highly employable across a wide range of organisations, not just limited to retail.

We encourage you to add an international experience to your degree by studying overseas for one semester during your second year (typically the autumn semester).

Surrey Business School currently has 23 exchange agreements spanning four continents, including Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and Ryerson University in Canada, which is particularly suited to students studying retail management. Professional Training placement fees

A reduced fee is charged for Professional Training placements.

Fees will not have to be paid up front for those eligible students who decide to take up the Government's loan for higher education fees. The Professional Training placement is a key factor in the high employability rates achieved by students with Surrey degrees.
