Our Degree
International Business Management aims to provide you with a broad, analytical and integrated study of business processes specifically geared to global issues such as international strategy and cross-cultural management. It is ideal for those wishing to pursue a general business management degree, with the added benefit of a global outlook and international orientation.
The programme combines mainstream management modules such as financial accounting and marketing with modules exclusively designed for international business. Globalisation of Emerging Markets, for example, offers a comprehensive look at the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) as well as South Africa and Eastern Europe as they integrate with the global economy. The programme will enhance your understanding of multinational companies and their strategies, as well as exploring how ‘local’ companies compete against such global players. You will also receive training on how to understand and benefit from cultural differences and have the opportunity to explore the ethics of international business.
The Surrey Business School has a strong global reputation and you will benefit from the fact that this programme is taught by international staff. Furthermore, our international exchange programme enables you to optimise your learning in your first semester of year 2 by spending time at one of our partner universities in Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Far East. We have excellent links with industry and outstanding opportunities to enhance your employability on our renowned Professional Training year, which can also be done abroad. Many of our students gain their first employment position as a direct result of their Professional Training year.
In the final year you will be introduced to international business strategy through the use of real-life examples, allowing you to consolidate the skills that you have learnt throughout your programme. You will have a number of optional modules from which to choose particular aspects of business management that interest you and fit best with your career aspirations.
We are one of only 14 business schools in the UK to hold accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

The business world is very competitive, so as a graduate, having a year of worthwhile industry experience provides Surrey students with a competitive advantage.

BSc Business Management*
I decided that I wanted to go to the University of Surrey because of the renowned Professional Training placement option and also because the programme allowed me to specialise in my preferred business subject – marketing.
The mixture of lectures and corresponding tutorials makes the learning experience dynamic and enjoyable. I also like that the two semesters have completely different modules, so after your first exams, you start fresh with new subjects.
The business world is very competitive, so as a graduate, having a year of worthwhile industry experience provides Surrey students with a competitive advantage. The University has strong relationships with companies who offer placement positions which are very advantageous for students.
My placement year was at Coty, the world’s leading fragrance manufacturer. My position there was marketing assistant, working on well-known brands such as adidas Body Care. The involvement in a global project was most exciting and feeling the sense of achievement within a team was great. My favourite part was seeing point-of-sale material in-store, many that I had helped to design and manage.
I made some friends for life at Surrey and took advantage of the social life at university! I went to the gym regularly and swam at Surrey Sports Park, plus I was a member and treasurer of the Dance Society for a year, which was great fun. Being involved in a sport is a fantastic way to meet new people and create friendship groups.
* The BSc International Business Management and BSc Business Management are similar for the first year of the programme. The first cohort of International Business Management students will be graduating in 2014.
The Surrey Business School offers plenty of support in finding a placement, including regular lectures, as well as help with your CV and interviews.

BSc Business Management*
I initially chose to study Business Management because I knew I wanted to work in business, but I was unsure which sector I wanted to specialise in. At Surrey, the first year of all business courses is standard for all students which means that by the end of Level 1, we all have the same knowledge level, so don’t fret if you’ve never done business or economics before! After Level 1, you can tailor your degree to what you enjoy and where you want to specialise.
The Surrey Business School is a great building with a lecture theatre that holds 400 people, more than most of the University’s other lecture theatres. The building is also equipped with computer rooms, as well as a coffee shop.
For me, one of the key reasons for choosing to study Business Management at Surrey was the option of doing the Professional Training year. This allows you to spend a year working for a company, earning real money and gaining lots of experience. The Surrey Business School offers plenty of support in finding a placement, including regular lectures, as well as help with your CV and interviews.
The Professional Training year greatly increases your chances of getting a job after graduating because you gain invaluable experience. Surrey is top for graduate employment and it is in a brilliant location for lots of the UK’s biggest companies. The Surrey Business School has some really strong links with employers, and they look to employ Surrey students.
