Our Degree

Our Media Studies programme builds your understanding of mediated communication and develops the hands-on production and communication skills employed in different media industries. We will equip you with the analytical abilities, knowledge, skills and awareness required to achieve personal and professional success in today’s media-rich world.

Media Studies at the University of Surrey combines the study of theories, concepts and methods with practical skills in media production. Our analytical modules critically examine:

  • Media industries and organisations who produce media
  • Technologies used in the production, diffusion and consumption of mediated content
  • Media texts such as films, television programmes and magazines
  • Media audiences and consumers

You will thus gain a detailed understanding of the social, cultural, political and economic impact of mediated communication, as well as deepening your understanding of complex social and economic relations – thereby substantially enhancing your employability across media and cultural industries.

The career prospects of our graduates also informs our particular emphasis on research methods throughout your degree. You will train in a variety of research methods and techniques that allow you to evaluate and conduct your own research, not only during your time at Surrey but also in professional careers ranging from journalism to film or advertising.

Following introductory modules to journalism and audio-visual media production in your first year, you will choose from optional modules focusing on newspaper, magazine and online journalism; film, radio and television production; public relations, marketing and advertising; and script writing.

Programme content

 Programme overview

In today’s world, we are all media producers, distributors and consumers alike. In this spirit, our Media Studies programme combines the analysis of media industries, texts, technologies and audiences with hands-on skills in journalism, audiovisual media production, film-making, journalism, professional writing, advertising and public relations.

  • You will develop an in-depth knowledge of the production, distribution and consumption of modern media, including:
  • An understanding of mediated representations and communications and their impact on our lives
  • An understanding of the ways in which people engage with mediated texts and create meaning from them
  • An understanding of production processes and professional practices in the media and cultural industries
  • An awareness of critical theories of media and communication
  • An awareness of the economic forces which frame the media, cultural and creative industries, and the role of such industries in specific areas of contemporary political and cultural life
  • An insight into the constructions of aesthetic judgements
  • A knowledge of the legal and regulatory frameworks which affect media and cultural production, circulation and consumption
  • An understanding of how media shape communities and identities in a globalising world, from youth, sub and fan cultures to nation states

The degree programme is based on a combination of core and optional modules in media theory and practice. This enables you to follow a degree pathway that matches your interests, whilst ensuring that you are equipped for the particular professional career you wish to pursue.

Core modules are studied by all students on the  programme. On these modules you gain an insight into key skills, concepts and knowledge which you will draw on throughout your degree and thereafter.

Optional modules in media theory have a particular focus on the study of different modern media and their social, cultural, political or economic impact. Media practice optional modules enable you to acquire hands-on skills, and allow you to establish the areas of media production that you most enjoy and would like to pursue professionally.

In year 1 core modules include Media, Communication and Society, a broad introduction to the role of traditional mass media such as television, radio and newspapers in modern life, and Media in the 21st Century, which studies the emergence of new forms of (online) communication such as social networking, Web 2.0, mobile phones and the wider process of media convergence. Re:presenting Difference addresses representations of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class, age and generation in social life and across different media, and Popular Culture and Everyday Life analyses different forms of modern entertainment, from blockbusters, celebrities, reality TV and popular music to media sports and their consumption. Finally, our first-year Research Methods module introduces students to the methods and techniques of conducting research during and beyond your degree programme.

In year 2 and year 3 the number of core modules decreases as you can choose from a wide range of options. These modules allow you to develop specific interests in areas such as fans and audiences, media sport, crime and media, popular music, television entertainment, internet cultures, political communication and terrorism, media technologies, media industries, production studies and ethnicity, and globalisation and media.

You will also further build practical skills by selecting options in various areas of media production.

The course has had a profound impact on my career and helped me land a job in the magazine industry within a few months of graduating

Amy Campbell
BA Media Studies

The programme was stimulating academically, innovative and very informative. It combines theory with practical and draws on a range of interesting research from studies of fandom to journalistic practices. There are many components to the programme, which are genuinely useful and immediately applicable to my current role. Staff are very knowledgeable and willing to provide additional support both within and outside of classes.

The course was demanding but it became one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had and one of the most valuable. The course has had a profound impact on my career and helped me land a job in the magazine industry within a few months of graduating. At present I am working in advertising at Hearst Magazines UK, working on titles that I love such as Cosmopolitan- this would have not been possible without my Media Studies degree at Surrey University.

I love the programme, I’ve made the most amazing friends and I have been able to secure excellent work experience.

Joanne Hobbs
BA Media Studies

I originally came to the University of Surrey because it offered the right course for me. What I liked about the Media Studies programme was the variety of module choices and the mix of theoretical and practical elements.

I am now in my final year and I can honestly say I made the right choice in coming to Surrey. I love the programme, I’ve made the most amazing friends and I have been able to secure excellent work experience. I have learnt how to deal with deadlines and I’ve greatly improved my communication and networking skills too.

The course covers a wide area of topics within media studies, as well as other areas such as journalism, sociology, TV and film. In the final year you are given the opportunity to specialise in the areas you find most interesting. The dissertation gives you the scope to study almost anything you are enthusiastic about. I am doing my dissertation on the fans of the ITV 2 show ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ – something I would have never thought was possible before.

Doing this course and attending the University of Surrey has, I feel, given me not only great academic skills but also everything else I need in pursuing the career in advertising that I have always dreamt of.
