Fees and funding

Fees and funding 2012

The increase in tuition fees has left many people confused and worried about going to university. But when you see the whole picture, the Surrey degree experience is still a great investment. And it may not cost as much as you think…

Our degrees have always been the best challenge a student can take on. In an increasingly competitive world, they’re also the best investment for your future.

This information relates to those applying for 2013 entry. For those applying for a 2012 start, please look at our 2012 entry fees and funding information.

Tuition Fees

What are our fees?

Tuition fees for UK / EU students on our undergraduate degree programmes are currently set at £9,000 per year. Much lower fee levels apply to our Professional Training placement programme, which is acknowledged as one of the best of its kind in the world. For students from lower income households, this fee is waived entirely.

UK / EU students on our NHS-funded programmes such as Nursing, Midwifery, Operating Department Practice and Paramedic Practice do not have to pay any tuition fees.

The fees for international students vary by degree programme. The fees will be available from the subject information pages from September 2012.

Why this amount?

It’s simple – we charge this amount because it is the approximate average cost per student per year of our undergraduate programmes and the upkeep of the campus.

In the past, funding sources such as Teaching Grants and grants for maintaining facilities allowed us to subsidise the fees charged for undergraduate degrees. Government policy has now reduced those funding sources, so we have no choice but to increase the fees.

Tuition-fee facts

We know that tuition fees are a serious issue, but don’t panic! It’s easy to feel scared of the word ‘debt’, so here are the facts for UK students:

  • You do not have to use your own money (or your parents’ money) before or during your degree to pay your university for standard tuition
  • The Government loans you the money to pay your tuition fees
  • You pay the money back to the Government in instalments after you graduate
  • You make repayments in proportion to your income, and only when it rises above a pre-determined level (£21,000 at time of writing)
  • The formula for calculating repayment rates is decided in advance so there won’t be any unexpected changes

What’s more, for most people the real cost of going to university is reduced through financial support and other sources of income.

Funding your studies

Bursaries and Scholarships

We want to encourage applications from everyone with the ability to study for a Surrey degree, so we will continue to offer our own financial incentives to students who might need, and qualify, for this support.

At the time of writing we were still finalising details of all the bursaries, fee waivers and scholarships we will offer in 2013, but we have committed ourselves to at least maintaining the generous package of accommodation discounts, cash bursaries and fee waivers that we offered to students from lower income backgrounds beginning their degree programmes in 2012.

Full details will be published here in September 2013. In the meantime, there are some features of the package that we know we will be able to offer you.

Chancellor’s Scholarship

We will continue to offer the University of Surrey Chancellor’s merit-based Scholarship for students starting in 2013, which gives a £3,000 cash award and membership of Surrey Sports Park to fee-paying students who achieve grades of A*AA at A-level (or equivalent). To be eligible for a Chancellor’s Scholarship, just select Surrey as your firm choice.

Sports Scholarships

If you are an elite athlete who wishes to combine competition with study, you may be eligible for one of our Sports Scholarships.

Ford Scholarships

Ford is providing sponsorship of £10,000 per student over a three-year period for 100 undergraduates on a selection of engineering, science, manufacturing and technology courses at leading UK universities.  Surrey has been selected as one of these universities alongside Bath, Bradford, Brunel, Cardiff, East Anglia, Imperial College London, Loughborough, Nottingham, Southampton, Strathclyde and Warwick.

Announced by William Clay Ford, great-grandson of Henry Ford and executive chairman of Ford Motor Company, the scholarship programme recognises the skills that are fundamental to Ford’s future industrial base, the rebalancing of the UK economy and long-term economic success.

Ford of Britain is celebrating both 100 years as a leading marketing and sales operation in the UK, reinforcing its relationship with a country which has made it the market leader in car sales for 35 consecutive years and the commercial vehicle sales leader for 46 years.

About Ford of Britain

In the UK, Ford directly employs over 15,000 people, many in highly skilled roles developing and building high-technology, fuel-efficient, low CO2 engines, but in total 100,000 jobs are supported through the Ford supplier chain and dealer network.

  • Ford's recently announced £1.5 billion investment in low-carbon engineering and manufacturing is helping to underpin the UK's manufacturing and export-based economic recovery.
  • Ford plants at Bridgend in South Wales and Dagenham in East London have the combined capacity to assemble two million engines annually so that one in three Ford vehicles globally can be powered by a UK-built engine.
  • Ford's Dunton Technical Centre in Essex is the global centre of excellence for diesel powertrain R&D and for European commercial vehicles.

Further details regarding eligibility and other criteria will be made available soon.

Help with costs

To cover your living costs while you study, you will need an income. Many students will have access to student loans, and students from low-income backgrounds will be able to apply for non-repayable maintenance grants to help with living expenses. We can even help you find part-time work if you need to top up your income, and our Student Advice team are on hand to help you manage your budget. There are also bursaries and scholarships available from a variety of sources. Some will pay for tuition fees, some will provide help with living costs while you study.

Value for money

Because we have invested in superb new academic, library, sports, arts and accommodation facilities during the last five years, you will be living and learning on one of the best-equipped campuses in the country. These facilities are already complete – they’re here for you to start using as soon as you arrive.

You will also be able to use our impressive new virtual learning environment, which allows you to interact with your lecturers and collaborate with fellow students via the internet on your computer or mobile device.

What’s more, we have been busily recruiting academics who are the best in their fields, so you’ll be learning from the very people who are shaping knowledge in your chosen subject.

And, of course, the unique Surrey approach to personal development, professional awareness and smarter learning will ensure you make an impact on the world for the rest of your life.
