Fees and funding
There are a lot of things to consider when deciding to study for a degree – what subject, which university and how much it will cost. At Surrey, we understand what a big undertaking this is. We also understand how important it is that we do everything we can to help you. That’s why our focus is on providing the best support package that we can and making it as accessible to as many students as possible.
This information relates to those applying for 2013 entry. For those applying for a 2012 start, please look at our 2012 entry fees and funding information.
Our tuition fees
Your degree is an investment in your future career. At Surrey we add value to your academic learning with a Professional Training placement year, acknowledged as one of the best of its kind in the world. Employers agree with us – we have an unrivalled track record for graduate employability over the last ten years. Latest available figures from the Higher Education Statistical Agency (HESA) show that 94.8% of our recent graduates were in employment or further study.
We have set our tuition fees for UK/EU students on our undergraduate degree programmes at £9,000 per year, so that we can continue to deliver a wonderful education and a degree that is rated by your future employers.
UK / EU students on our NHS-funded programmes such as Nursing, Midwifery, Operating Department Practice and Paramedic Practice do not have to pay any tuition fees.
Fees for students classed as overseas for fee purposes are available on each subject page.
Fees during our Professional Training placement year
The majority of our students have the opportunity to take part in our Professional Training placement programme, in which case a Surrey degree will normally last four years. The fees during this year are substantially reduced to £1,050. For students from lower income households, this fee is waived entirely.
Most students on our Professional Training placement programme are paid a salary by their employers, which is a valuable source of income during their time at Surrey.
For those who are on an unpaid placement, we have a fund to ensure they receive financial support during their placement year.
Number crunching: loans and grants
To get a true picture of what university will cost you, it is important to make sure you have included everything in your calculations – even the subtractions!
When you are looking at the total amount it may cost you to come to university, there are some facts which should help you get things straight in your own mind.
Don’t pay fees up front
It is estimated that this is the least cost effective way of paying for tuition. Instead, consider a loan. They work like this:
- The Government loans you the money to pay your tuition fees
- You pay the Government back, in instalments, after you graduate
- Your repayments are in proportion to your income
- You only start repaying when you earn over a certain amount (£21,000 at time of writing)
- Repayment rates are decided in advance so there shouldn’t be any unexpected changes
Don’t just take our word for it. Watch a film from Martin Lewis, Head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information, explaining why everyone can afford to go to university.
Support from the Government
For many people the real cost of going to university is reduced through financial support from the Government.
Maintenance Loan
This helps with living costs and is paid into your bank account each term. Here are a few facts to help you understand Maintenance Loans:
- Only full-time students can apply for a Maintenance Loan
- The exact amount you can borrow depends on your family’s income, where you live, where you study, what year of study you’re in, and what help you get through the Maintenance Grant
- Rates for final-year students are different
Maintenance Grant for living costs
- Only full-time students can apply for a Maintenance Grant to help with living costs. These are available to students with a household income of £42,600 or less. Your household income is your parents’ or partner’s income and your own
- If you get a Maintenance Grant your Maintenance Loan will be reduced
Special Support Grant
For students who get or qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit. You may qualify for the Special Support Grant if:
- You’re a single parent
- Your partner is also a student
- You have certain disabilities
For full details and qualifying criteria, please visit the Government's Student Finance website.

Some thoughts from our current students
We asked some of our new first-year students how they feel about the money side of studying at Surrey.
Elliot Francis
BSc (Hons) Computer Science
This is the first year that the new fees have been in place. The rules have changed quite a bit from last year. How you pay your student loan back is certainly different.
It seems like a fair deal to me, because I leave with a degree at the end of my time at Surrey. A degree in Computer Science often results in a highly paid job. To increase my chances of employment, the Professional Training year at Surrey will enhance my professional development and help secure the job that I want. According to the sliding scale of payments, paying back the fees will be easily manageable with a graduate salary.
Georgia Stavrou
BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science
I come from Cyprus but I chose to come and study in the UK as this means I can apply for a student loan to help fund my degree tuition fees payment. Taking a student loan allows me to repay when I secure employment after my degree. This means I don’t have to put a financial burden on my parents.
Choosing which university was important but the opportunity to take a placement year at the University of Surrey was the most important factor for me.
Surrey also offers ways to help with the financial side of your degree. I have applied for the Surrey Chancellor’s Scholarship Scheme, and should find out if I have been successful in the next couple of weeks. Surrey are also part of the National Scholarship Programme, and offer a Surrey bursary which will help with accommodation costs.
Georgia Macey
BSc (Hons) Psychology
I knew that I wanted to come to university from a young age. This was before the fees increased but I still wanted to get my degree.
My choice of subject was really important to me. I have wanted a career in psychology for a long time. I chose the University of Surrey because of its Professional Training year. I think that this will be attractive to future employers and it will be good for my CV. With this experience, I will be able to get a good job and pay my student loan back with my salary.
Rebecca Pulsford
BSc (Hons) Psychology
I have always wanted to go to university to study for a psychology degree. When it became clear that the fees during my years at university would be £9,000 a year, I was worried about how I was going to deal with it.
When I came to the Open Day at the University of Surrey, I had not even applied for university. But, at Surrey, I was given a whole brochure about fees and finance. The brochure explained it all really well, showed me that I could do my degree and could take on the course without any issues. I read it through with my family and decided it was still the route I wanted to take, despite the increase in fees.
The Professional Training placement year offered at Surrey really made it stand out compared to other universities in the UK. That’s why I decided to come to Surrey!
