Fees and Funding 2012

Fees and funding 2013

All English universities and colleges are making changes to their fees structures as a result of new Government regulations. The information in this section outlines the main changes and also sets out the University of Surrey’s fee and financial support proposals.

Tuition fees

All English universities and colleges are making changes to their fees structures as a result of new Government regulations.

UK/EU students

The University of Surrey is charging a tuition fee of £9,000 per year for UK/EU undergraduates starting programmes in all subject areas in 2012.

The tuition charge is accompanied by a generous financial support package, underlining our continued commitment to widening access for those students who come from low income households.

Professional Training Year Fees

Fees of £1,050 (based on an inflation assumption of 2.5%) will be charged for the Professional Training Year. Fees will not have to be paid up front for those students who decide to take up the Government’s loan for higher education fees. The Professional Training year is a key factor in the high employability rates achieved by Students with Surrey degrees.

NHS-related programmes

Home and EU students following NHS-related programmes are subject to separate funding arrangements, administered through the Department of Health.

Overseas students

For students classed as overseas for fees purposes, the annual full-time tuition fees payable for 2012 entry will range, in general, from £11,550 to £14,440. Please see our full list of overseas fees for details.

The University will assess your fee status. If you are unsure whether you are likely to be considered a home, EU or overseas student for fees purposes, the UKCISA website offers more information.

No Upfront Costs

If you are a UK/EU student, you don’t have to pay for your course yourself upfront. You can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition. You will only start to pay this back once you have graduated and are earning over £21,000 a year.

Some students may decide not to take the Government loan for fees and wish to pay the £9000 fee from their own resources or other source of funding.

Direct payment of fees to the University will be straightforward for those who decide to follow this route and will be invoiced in the relevant year of study.

Why is the University of Surrey charging tuition fees of £9000 a year?

We are committed to safeguarding the quality of the experience that we offer to our students.  We have a ten year track record of achieving the highest rates of graduate employability, a key factor in the value of a Surrey degree. However, we cannot afford to be complacent.  We want both to maintain this position and to continue to build upon the high quality of our teaching and the provision of first class facilities and infrastructure for our students, so you can get the best possible return from your time with us.

Changes to our fee levels reflect the extensive changes to the funding of higher education in the UK. Teaching grants have been cut by over 60% and money made available for the maintenance and development of University facilities has been cut by 70%. There are also a number of uncertainties about the number of UK/EU students that the Government will allow universities to take in future and changes to the rules governing immigration policy that could alter the position for international students.

The University has taken a sustainable approach to financial management in the past.  After careful consideration of the options on funding, we believe it is only through setting this fee rate that we will be able to achieve our goals and maintain the best possible student experience.

Other financial support

We have a strong record in providing targeted bursaries and we believe that fees must not be a disincentive for talented young people who want to apply to study a degree.

In addition to the loans and grants available to students from the Government, we are introducing a range of financial support measures including fee waivers and bursaries targeted at students living in households with an income of less than £30,000.

For full details of our financial support available, please download our Fees and Funding 2012 brochure PDF.

Ensuring fair access

These measures are designed to help ensure that talent and potential are the only factors influencing attendance at the University and that no-one is disadvantaged by their personal circumstances.

National Scholarship Programme

Eligible Students from low income households, who achieve the entry criteria, will benefit from the National Scholarship Programme which the University of Surrey is participating in and also from
a special Surrey Bursary Scheme offering additional financial support.

Maintenance Grants

FAQs

Q: What is a ‘fee waiver’?

A: A fee waiver is where we agree to meet the cost of part of the fees on a student’s behalf.  For example, if a fee waiver of £2,000 is offered on tuition fees of £9,000, you will only need to take out a loan for £7,000. The University will pay the difference.

Q: What is a cash bursary?

A: A cash bursary is a payment from the University to assist students with covering the cost of their general expenses while studying for their degree.

Q: Are fee waivers/bursaries repayable?

A: Fee waivers and bursaries are not repayable – they are intended to provide financial support to eligible students from low income households.

Q: How do I apply for financial support?

A: Students should apply to Student Finance England for means-tested student support and give consent for household income data to be shared with us. We will receive information about your family’s income and will automatically assess your eligibility for one of our awards each year without you needing to do anything further, provided that you continue to receive student support in subsequent academic years.

Q: What happens if I change my programme of study?

A: Provided you change from one full-time degree programme to another, then this should not affect your entitlement to support.  However, if you take time out from your studies, or change from full-time to part-time attendance for any periods, the level of fees payable and the support to which you are entitled may be affected. Further information and advice on this is available from the Fees and Funding Team in the Registry at feesandfunding@surrey.ac.uk.

Q: Will EU students be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme and Surrey Bursary Scheme?

A: EU students with a low household income, as verified by Student Finance England (see question above - How do I apply for financial support?) are only eligible for Fee waiver support under the National Scholarship Programme and the Surrey Bursary Scheme.

Q: Are students from Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland eligible?

A: National Scholarship Programmed awards will not be available to individuals who are ordinarily resident in Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. More information for students from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can be found on the following websites.

Q: What about fees and benefits for part-time students?

A: The Browne Review recommended up front loans support for the tuition costs of learning would be extended to part-time students.  The Government has agreed with this, providing students are studying at the equivalent to one quarter of a year (0.25FTE).

Q: Do these arrangements apply to nursing students (eg the NHS Bursary scheme)?

A: The arrangements set out here do not apply to students undertaking programmes that are NHS-funded.

Home and EU students studying on an NHS-related programmes (Midwifery Studies, Nursing Studies, Operating Department Practice, Paramedic Practice) do not pay tuition fees of £9000 per year. These programmes are subject to separate funding arrangements, administered through the NHS and the Department of Health.
