My main reason for choosing Surrey was because it offers a placement year as part of the course, which I knew would give me a better insight into the nutrition industry in the UK.

What you'll study

If you’re passionate about food, eager to explore how it affects the health of the individual and the nation, and curious to discover how diet can be used in the treatment of disease, our Nutrition and Dietetics programmes are for you.

As a student on our Nutrition programme, you will learn about food and the nutrients which it contains, how the body uses them and how they relate to health and disease.

Programme overview

Our Nutrition degree offers a range of optional modules and is available as a three- or four-year degree, depending on whether you choose to undertake a Professional Training placement.

It is designed for those who wish to pursue a commercial, public health or research-orientated career, and instils the core skills and competencies required of the modern nutritionist.

The programme has an active application across a range of health and professional industries and will equip you with the knowledge, skills and expertise required to excel in this fascinating field.

Programme structure

Year 1 (FHEQ Level 4)

Year 1 includes modules in nutrition and food science, as well as a range of other sciences.

Compulsory modules:

  • Microbiology: An Introduction to the Microbial World
  • Food Science and Nutrition
  • Cell Biology for Nutrition and Sports Science
  • Biochemistry: Building Blocks of Life
  • Introduction to Principles of Physiology and Practical Skills
  • Key Skills for Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Molecular Biology and Genetics - Genes and their Function

Year 2 (FHEQ Level 5)

During Year 2, core nutrition modules are combined with the study of physiology, pathology and medicine, and food science to ensure appropriate background knowledge.

Professional Training placement (optional)

Professional Training placements are usually paid and may be in the food industry, government research establishments or the NHS.

Our Professional Training tutor will help organise your choice of placement and you will be visited by academic staff, normally three times, during your placement. Companies and institutes offering placements include Nestlé and Kellogg’s.

Students who do not wish to take a Professional Training placement follow the three-year programme.

Year 3 (FHEQ Level 6)

In Year 3, you will undertake a final-year dissertation on a subject of your choice. Taught modules allow a more in-depth understanding of all aspects of human nutrition.

Professional recognition

The Nutrition programme is accredited by the Association for Nutrition. Upon graduation, students can apply to become an Associate Nutritionist, and then a Registered Nutritionist after three years of experience.

Additional costs

There are associated costs with this programme:

  • Safety equipment and/or uniform: £20
  • Grand total: £20

The equipment pack includes laboratory coat, laboratory glasses, laboratory book, pen and padlock.

Global opportunities

Our international exchange programme offers you the opportunity to study abroad at a partner university for either one semester or a full academic year as part of your degree. As a Nutrition student, it might be possible for you to spend your full second year at one of our partner institutions in the USA (for example North Carolina).

The exchange programme enables you to study and live in another country and earn credits that contribute towards your Surrey degree, without paying additional tuition fees.

In doing so you will broaden your horizons, meet other exchange students from around the world and experience student life in some of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Studying abroad also enables you to become more independent, teaching you how to adapt and adjust to the culture and climate of another country.

In addition, or alternatively, you may wish to consider spending your Professional Training year working in another country. Students have travelled to the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil and many European countries, and typically work in a research laboratory at a partner institution.

If you work in another part of Europe you will be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant, as well as your full student loan if undertaking an unpaid research placement in a foreign university laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity not only to acquire valuable work experience, but also to improve or learn another language.

On average you will have 24 hours of contact time each week. A variety of teaching methods is used, including lectures, role play and practicals.

You will also be expected to undertake private study (such as coursework and additional reading). You will also take part in problem-based learning activities and benefit from a range of supporting e-learning materials.


Each module is assessed individually and credits are awarded for the successful completion of each one. Assessment is through a combination of examination and/or coursework, which may include individual projects and group work.

The following represents an indicative estimate of how you can expect your time to be split on this programme, based on the information available at the time of publication (February 2016):

  • 1 per cent personal tutorial/small group teaching
  • 1 per cent medium group teaching
  • 20 per cent large group teaching
  • 78 per cent studying and revising in your own time

Career opportunities

Our Nutrition graduates have attractive career prospects in the food industry and health service, as well as in research, education and the media. A considerable number return to their Professional Training placement company/organisation.

What qualifications do you need?



We do not include General Studies or Critical Thinking in our offers.

It is desirable for those applicants taking part in the Science Practical Endorsement in either Physics, Biology or Chemistry to obtain a pass.

Two Science A Levels which must include Biology and a second science (Applied Science, Chemistry, Food Technology, Home Economics, Maths, Physics or Psychology)

Selection process

Offers are normally made in terms of grades.

Suitable candidates will be invited to an Applicant Day. During the visit to the University the candidate can find out more about the programme and meet staff and students.

English language requirements

6.5 IELTS minimum overall (or equivalent)

6.0 IELTS minimum in each sub-skill (or equivalent)

If you are an international student and you are concerned that your English is not to the required standard, you may benefit from the International Foundation Year, run by the Surrey International Study Centre.
