About the programme*
Professor Roberto La Ragione (Professor of Veterinary microbiology and pathology) explains: “At Surrey we have created an exciting five year Veterinary Medicine degree programme centred around a One Health-One Medicine theme. In working with our local clinical partners including the Pirbright institute (PI), the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA), Liphook Equine Hospital (LEH), Fitzpatrick Referrals (FPR), the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) and Westpoint Farm Vets we will engage students in a range of clinical and research disciplines from day one.”
A particularly distinctive aspect of our curriculum will be the close liaison with the PI, AHVLA, and the VMD providing students with the opportunity to develop skills in areas such as research, livestock medicine, pathology, surveillance, risk analysis, epidemiology, veterinary public health and state veterinary medicine.
Our curriculum will also incorporate a comprehensive business skills module run in collaboration with the Surrey Business School and the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences. Topics will include business, ethics, law, sociology and psychology. This approach ensures that we will be providing students with comprehensive and up-to-date training in scientific, clinical and business skills, ensuring they are highly employable on graduation.
Professor Noel Fitzpatrick of Fitzpatrick Referrals comments “Fitzpatrick Referrals is hugely supportive of the new Vet School at the University of Surrey. We embrace this educational partnership with a mutual aim of enthusing young talented graduates who will make a considerable contribution to our profession and to animal welfare for the next generation and beyond. As the slogan for the Olympics brought home to us – we consider it our responsibility to inspire a new generation of veterinary clinical scientists, using the most technologically advanced and innovative educational strategies. We are hugely excited for the future of this collaboration”
The School will include brand new state-of-the-art facilities including a large academic building, research laboratories, veterinary pathology research and teaching facilities, and a student-led livestock farm, all of which will be located on the Surrey campus.
