Getting set up
Activate Your IT Account
If you haven’t already done so, you will need to activate your IT account to get your University username and email address. You will need your University number and your date of birth to do this. You will find your University number in previous correspondence from the University.
There are two ways of activating your account:
Online - on and off campus
You can activate your IT account online (including before you arrive) by visiting the IT account activation website.
Activation kiosk - on campus
When you are on campus you can activate your IT account from one of our dedicated account activation machines. These can be found in the Austin Pearce Building and in the Library. Please be aware that demand for these machines is extremely high at the start of the academic year and there may be queues.
Once you have activated your IT account, you can access your University email at: http://surrey365.surrey.ac.uk
Set Up Your Internet
Connecting to ResNet
In your room or flat you will find a connection point to Surrey ResNet – the ‘residences network’. This will allow you to access the Internet using your own computer.
ResNet is not like your Internet connection at home – you will need to register your computer and run a quick system check to ensure that it is safe and ready to go. If you have run the remote scan from home (see Step 2 in Set up Your IT), you will not have much left to do, but in either case the procedure is straightforward.
When you arrive, there will be a Welcome to Surrey ResNet information sheet in your room which explains how to connect your computer, and from there ResNet itself guides you through what you need to do.
If this information sheet is missing, you can get a replacement from your court reception, the Accommodation Office, or the University IT Help Desk in the Austin Pearce Building.
What to do if you have difficulties
If the instructions on the card do not work for you, then there are further step-by-step instructions for Windows, MacOS and Linux computers available from the court receptions and the Accommodation Office.
If you still have problems, then the University IT support team are happy to help. To get help with ResNet, simply fill in a ResNet Support form at your court reception (or for Hazel Farm users, at the University IT Help Desk) and we will arrange for a ResNet Advisor to visit you in the evening.
Please do try to follow the instructions on the information sheets before asking for help as there will be a high demand for ResNet Advisors at the start of the year. Alternatively, you can visit the University IT Help Desk in the Austin Pearce Building. They will be able to help with some ResNet issues, but there may be long queues at the start of the year.
We try to make the experience for our new users a smooth one - details of any additional help that has been organised will be posted in your court receptions when you arrive.
