Old age and health: Event to discuss how we can promote continued good health with age

Research looking at how we may promote continued good health as we age will be presented at an upcoming Surrey Healthy Ageing Research Partnership Event at the University of Surrey.

SHARP, a partnership between older members of the public and researchers at the University of Surrey, will be hosting their first free event post-Covid-19 to members of the public on Thursday 14 December from 2 pm until 4 pm.

Dr Natalie Riddell, Senior Lecturer in Immunology and Ageing at the University of Surrey, said:

“Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the UK population is ageing. They estimate that by 2039 the number of people aged 75 could double from 5 million to nearly 10 million. This is not only a problem in the UK but worldwide so much so that is now a part of the UN Sustainability Goals.

“Ageing and how it affects the body, including our immune system, is an under-researched area of science, however at Surrey, this is something that we have prioritised and we are delighted to invite members of the public to join us to learn more about the work we are doing.”

Talks will be delivered by Dr David Bartlett on ‘Exercise, the immune system and cancer’ and by Dr Richard Green on ‘The social study of health and illness.’

Research from a wide range of experts from the fields of biology, psychology, social sciences, engineering and artificial intelligence will also be available to view.

To learn more about the event and register your attendance, please email SHARP@surrey.ac.uk or alternatively telephone 01483 686475.
