Sustainability Week 2024: key highlights

The University and Students' Union recently hosted its annual Sustainability Week, a week-long festival dedicated to raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices.

The week took place 22 - 26 April 2024, and featured a series of engaging activities, workshops and initiatives both at the University and in the wider local community.

Key highlights include:

  • The launch of the University's net zero carbon by 2030 plan:

The University's new net zero carbon plan for scope 1 and 2 emissions was released. The plan follows 8 actions, aiming to reduce demand whilst transitioning to renewable energy. Staff and students had the opportunity to find out more about the plan during a Sustainability Assembly organised in the week. A student-led energy audit of Stag Hill Campus took place, providing practical experience for students in supporting the University's net zero carbon journey.

  • Protecting local biodiversity:

Students' Union volunteers organised a session to nurture the Community Garden alongside the University's Chaplaincy. New beehives have also been installed on campus, with staff and students taking part in beehive inspections throughout the week. Information on how the University continues to protect and support local wildlife was also shared during a biodiversity walk, organised by the University's Grounds Team.

  • Sustainable food:

A new sustainable and ethical food plan was released by the University's Catering Team. The plan coincided with The Hideout Cafe on Stag Hill Campus going plastic free, as well as a Soup Off between the two Head Chefs at Hillside and Lakeside. Soups made by the Chefs used up leftover ingredients - a resourceful practice that takes place everyday in University catering kitchens to limit food waste.

  • Careers' ethical code of practice:

Following discussion with student representatives, the Careers Service launched a new ethical code of practice. The Service will continue to provide students and graduates with opportunity to engage with a variety of employers, will actively promote opportunities supporting the transition towards a net zero carbon future, and will encourage organisations that support the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.
