5GIC membership privacy notice
Who we are
We are part of the University of Surrey, which is registered as a Data Controller with the Information Commissioner’s Office (our notification number is Z6346945), and we are committed to ensuring that the data we process is handled in accordance with data protection legislation.
We have a named Data Protection Officer, James Newby, who can be contacted via firstname.lastname@example.org.
What information do we collect from you
The University collects only the data we need and we keep the data up to date and only for as long as it is needed.
Why do we collect this information
We use the data that you provide in order to:
- Assess if you qualify for a certain level of membership
- Communicate with you regarding your membership application
- Notify you of events and updates that we feel may interest you.
We take our obligations for data handling very seriously and it is therefore important for you to know the lawful basis for us processing your information.
How we process your data
We process your personal data under the lawful basis of our legitimate interests and those of others. We have identified this processing as being in our own legitimate interests because one of the functions of the 5GIC is to build collaborative relationships with a range of local, regional, national and international partners in the communications industry to help translate research from the lab to a real-world environment, and to develop and test 5G technologies and services.
We have also identified the legitimate interest of furthering communications technologies and applications, for the benefit of the communications sector and society as a whole.
These legitimate interests are determined through an assessment made by weighing our requirements against the impact of the processing on you. Our legitimate interests will never override your right to privacy and the freedoms that require the protection of your personal data. If you are interested in learning more about this legitimate interest assessment, please contact the Information Compliance team.
How we collect the data
We collect data from you via the member application form you submit, and we store this data securely for the duration of your membership.
How long do we keep your information
Your information is kept for as long as you remain a member of 5GIC, and will be deleted immediately if you choose to end your membership.
Who do we share your information with
Your data may be shared internally where we consider that you might be a candidate for a higher tier of membership.
If we think you are eligible for a higher tier of membership, we will share some of your membership details with the Senior Advisory Board (SAB), the membership of which includes other SME organisations. Where we would like to recommend you for a higher tier of membership, we will notify you of this in advance of providing your membership details to the members of the SAB.
What rights do you have in relation to the way we process your data
You have certain rights over your data under Data Protection legislation, including the right to amend, access and erase your data, and to object to or restrict what we do with it. You can find detailed information about your rights as a data subject on the University’s webpage.
