Alumni and friends

Each year, the University of Surrey receives the voluntary support of alumni, friends, local businesses and entrepreneurs. These gifts of time and expertise benefit the University in many important ways, and the impact of our volunteers cannot be underestimated.

By volunteering, you can make a vital contribution to what makes Surrey successful. You can support both current and prospective students, help the University meet its objectives and maintain and grow our global reputation.

We are always delighted to welcome new alumni to the volunteering community, and there are many ways in which you can help.

Event support

Event host

Our comprehensive events programme can only continue to flourish with the generous support of individuals and companies who can offer to host or sponsor events on our behalf.

Our events range from large lectures and networking receptions to intimate reunion dinners, both in the UK and overseas. We would be delighted to hear from you if you can host an event, or if you can offer a venue you think may be suitable for our use.

Reunion organiser

We are always keen to encourage alumni to stay in touch and reconnect with old classmates from Surrey and are grateful for all our volunteers who can help us in this way by organising reunions.

If you would like to plan an alumni gathering, there are a variety of ways we can support you. Please get in touch with Lucy Evans on to find out more.

Are you already organising a Surrey reunion? Let us know so we can thank you!

Open Day ambassador

Our alumni ambassadors are invaluable at Open Days and applicant events, sharing their experiences with prospective students and parents. Visitors genuinely value talking with graduates who have first-hand, recent insight of areas such as studying and living on campus, taking a Professional Training year and employment after graduation.

As our ambassadors play a very positive part in a prospective student’s decision to choose our University, we are always on the look-out for enthusiastic and committed graduates of the past five years in all disciplines.

The role

Alumni ambassadors support a variety of areas at Open Days, including assisting academics on the stand of your subject of study, welcoming visitors on registration, chaperoning visitors to subject talks and answering questions about the Surrey experience.

We are currently recruiting graduates from 2011-2016 as ambassadors for the University of Surrey Open Days in 2017. Please get in touch with Lucy Evans on to find out more.

Mentor a student

We're currently recruiting industry mentors to inspire talented students at Surrey, help them to reach their potential and guide them as leaders of tomorrow.

As a mentor you can share your insights from industry, help students develop their employability skills and exposure to how business operates, support them in developing their professional networks and much more.

You can also enhance your own professional development, including leadership and communication skills, gaining fresh perspectives on your business and networking with fellow mentors

School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Mentoring and Professional Development Module (in partnership with Troika recruitment)

We are recruiting up to 50 industry mentors to support a final year professional development module, commencing in autumn 2017. If you are actively working in the hospitality and tourism sector, have over five years’ experience and are passionate about supporting the future generation of industry professionals, we would love to hear from you.

MBA Match mentor scheme

From real-world insight to networking and personal connections, the MBA Match scheme aims to help students make the most of their career and professional development opportunities with guidance from experienced business professionals.

Student Enterprise

Can you spare at least 90 minutes each week to provide face-to-face mentoring to enterprising students who want to develop start-up businesses? If you have experience in successfully setting up and running a company and can share practical knowledge with students, please get in touch.

Careers support

Alumni who choose to relay their career journey to students have the power to truly enhance their professional development.

Your experience of the world of work is invaluable to those who aspire to enter your industry, because sharing your knowledge can:

  • Provide first-hand insight into current business demands
  • Inspire and encourage students to enter into their chosen profession
  • Prepare them for the challenges they may encounter

Support from alumni and industry professionals at the Careers Service’s comprehensive programme of workshops, events and practical advice sessions to help students and recent graduates with their employment search and career development is always welcomed.

Meet our volunteers

Our volunteers come from a diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines, hold a variety of skills and are at different career stages.

Their common ground is a shared desire and enthusiasm to work together to really make a difference to the University of Surrey community. We asked our volunteers why they chose to support Surrey.

Janet Preston

BSc Physics 1978, Director of Cold Fuzion business consultancy

"I had four fabulous years at Surrey and I want to give something back. I get to pass on my business experience and work with bright young minds testing the boundaries. In return, I’m gaining new insights in the digital media and retailing industries, worlds quite different to my own."

Lewis Young

LLB Law 2012, Legal Assistant at The Partnership Ltd

"I always felt passionately about the University, and, as I always felt at home at Surrey, being able to share this with prospective students means that my experiences can be of benefit to someone else."

Mondiu Jaiyesimi

MSc Energy Economics & Policy 2011, Analyst at Deloitte

"I really enjoyed my time at Surrey and I have always wanted to come back to do something for the University. This volunteering opportunity came exactly at the right time."

Julie Havelund

BA Dance, Dance Artist

"Volunteering is not only great for gaining knowledge in certain areas and expanding the CV, but furthermore for interaction with people involved. Even if the connection is only short term, I believe the confidence gained in volunteering is precious."

Rob Nolan

BSc Business Management 2011, Operations Management Trainee at GIST

"I decided to volunteer as a graduate to provide prospective students with an additional aspect to their decision-making process when looking at university choices. I was a student ambassador during my time at Surrey and I really enjoy helping others."
