Renowned pianist Ian Pace recreates David Tudor’s New Year’s Day programme from 1952, throwing the spotlight on a seminal moment when the European avant-garde and US experimental traditions seemed briefly in alignment.

The programme includes two intricate but contrasting examples of musical organisation, Pierre Boulez serial Second Piano Sonata and John Cage’s I Ching inspired Music of Changes.

Pierre Boulez                      Piano Sonata No. 2 (1946-8)

Morton Feldman                 Variations (1951)

Christian Wolff                    For Piano 1 (1952)

John Cage                           Music of Changes (1951)
