BA Third Year Acting Rep Season

By Anton Chekhov

Reworked using text from Andrzej Sadowski’s adaptation.

Music composed by Nigel Piper

“Ordinary life with its wasted opportunities, human misunderstandings and alienation is by itself dramatic enough…” Anton Chekhov

This tragicomedy was written in 1900 and, as with all of Chekhov’s most successful plays, it was written near the end of his life.  In four acts, the play spans three and a half years in the fortunes of the four children of a recently deceased Colonel in the Russian army: the educated and refined Prozorov sisters, Irina, Masha, Olga  and their academically brilliant brother Andrey. They squander their youth in a provincial town, incapable of changing their lives for the better. Moscow, where they hope to return, becomes the symbol of the futile dreams.
