Travel grants

IOM3 - Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining

There are two grants available, one from the Andrew Carnegie Research Fund and the other from the Metals and Metallurgy Trust.

Requirements: Applications are only considered from IOM3 members and the age limit is usually 35, preference is given to those presenting papers. Membership costs £35 for a postgraduate.

Value: Up to £250.

Deadline: Please apply at least 2 months prior to the conference.

SAMPE - Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering

Requirements: Research topic related to advanced materials and processes, in particular those based on high performance composites preference to presenting papers and membership 20 Euro student membership.

Value: up to £350 UK, £500 International.

Deadline: Please apply at least 2 months prior to the conference.

IMechE - Institute of Mechanical Engineering

Requirements: Grants are only available to members who have been invited to speak at a conference.

Membership costs £36 for under 25s, £94.50 for 25-26, £147 for 27-29 and £210 for 30+.

Value: Up to £1000.

Deadline: Please apply at least 2 months prior to the conference.

How to apply: Fill out the online application form.

Applicants must be supported by three referees:

  • One who can confirm applicant’s attendance at the conference and explain what affect this will have on the engineering community
  • One who can vouch for applicant’s character and suitability for an award
  • One who can state how an award will benefit the applicant’s engineering development

Armourers and Braziers

This is a travel grant for a research student working in materials science, who needs financial support for attendance at an academic conference to give an oral or poster presentation.

Value: Varying amounts depending upon the location and costs involved.

IOP - Institute of Physics

Research Student Conference Fund and Early Career Researchers Fund

These are to provide financial support for attending international conferences, major national meetings and to visit international facilities.

Requirements: You must be a member of the Institute and at least one of its special interest groups.

Value: Up to £300.

Deadline: Please apply at least three months prior to the conference.

C R Barber Trust Fund

This is to fund early career researchers who are in the early stages of their career, and who wish to attend an overseas conference.

Requirements: You must be a member of the Institute, be attending an overseas conference of international standing, not a national meeting and have not received a grant from the C R Barber Trust Fund before.

Value: £100 for Europe, £175 for USA/Canada, £300 for rest of the world.

Deadline: Please apply at least one month prior to the conference.

IET - Institute of Engineering and Technology

For members of IET you can apply for a grant at six times of the year to help you present a paper or post at an international conference, or participate in international research visits of projects.

Requirements: Institute membership. Membership costs £50 for a postgraduate for the duration of your course or £20 for a year.

Value: Up to £500.

Deadline: Please apply at least 2 months prior to the conference.

UKSAF - UK Surface Analysis Forum

There are a number of awards available to help you travel to an international conference where you are presenting your work.

Requirements: You must be a member of UKSAF and attended at least one UKSAF meeting in the last three years, your work must include the use of surface analysis techniques and your abstract needs to have been accepted for presentation at the conference.

Value: Up to £500 for Europe, £1000 for international conferences.

Deadline: Late summer.

RSC - Royal Society of Chemistry

This is for members to get funding for travel to either attend an RSC run conference or workshop, or for members to attend a scientific conference or workshop anywhere in the world.

Requirements: Institute membership and membership to a particular research topic division.

Value: Up to £200 UK, £400 Europe, £800 International.

Deadline: At least eight weeks before your conference.
