"Criminology and Sociology is a versatile course where you get to choose modules that you are interested in. I hadn’t studied Sociology before I came to Surrey but my lecturers and course mates were really supportive. The seminars for the theory modules were really helpful because you break down what you learnt in the lectures and you can discuss ideas with your peers.
The course is interactive and you are able to see how your knowledge relates to the world. I have enjoyed learning about prisons and youth offending, which I am basing my dissertation on. We are able to see real life examples through visiting a women’s prison which helped us to understand what we were learning in the lectures. It inspired me to visit other places to expand my knowledge in the field, as well as gaining actual experience volunteering at a young offenders’ centre.
The lecturers interact with you on a personal level. They want to help you develop not just academically, but personally as well. They are very informative and helpful as they are always available to ask questions.
I feel extremely comfortable at the University of Surrey as you have your own community. The library is fantastic as you have your own floor where your subject is so everything is easy to find. There are quiet places to study but also spaces where you can do group work. The Surrey Sports Park has all the sports facilities you could need too.
This course has improved my motivation and organisation skills, as well as making me more passionate about what I want to do. I have been encouraged to explore different opportunities outside of studies. After graduation, I would love to discover more about criminal investigation. I am definitely glad I came here.
