"I chose Surrey because of the excellent reputation it has established for itself, placing consistently highly in various UK and international rankings. The Stag Hill campus is a great place to be in terms of the environment – the lake and its surrounding green space add an air of tranquillity to the energy of university life.
Before starting the course I spent several years working in the pharmaceutical industry following the completion of my undergraduate degree in Biology. I wanted to extend the knowledge I had gained and developed during this time. The course offered the ideal platform for this, whilst also providing substantial opportunity to apply and consolidate the understanding through working directly with patients.
Clinical medicine is a continually evolving discipline focused primarily on improving patients’ quality of life. I find a great sense of fulfilment in the problem-solving aspect of the study; researching and articulating my understanding of pathology, for the benefit of patients, is a very rewarding undertaking.
We are taught by experts in their fields – professors, consultants and even Physician Associates currently working within the NHS. I enjoy learning in a collaborative environment characterised by knowledge sharing, passion for the profession and mutual respect.
The standard of teaching is outstanding; it is evident that the academic staff are passionate both about our learning and our development into exemplary clinicians.
We have access to good learning environments on-site and have established links with exceptional local facilities such as the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (MATTU) and The Whiteley Clinic.
My advice to any future students would be to be prepared to work hard and face challenges, but gain a huge sense of achievement with the level of knowledge you will acquire and the skills you will develop.
The best thing about the University is its proximity to Surrey Sports Park, with its student memberships and world-class facilities. We are surrounded by a number of highly regarded global companies, many of which have long-established links with the University. Living in Surrey, you are never far from the countryside and there are plentiful places to eat and good pubs to visit. Guildford provides the ideal mix of both urban and country life.
Since starting my programme, I have sharpened my research skills and developed the ability to teach within a group. My role as a student representative has been pivotal in gaining valuable liaison, communication and networking experience.
I hope to gain a Physician Associate post within the NHS and continue my professional development within medicine. I am keen to get involved with any expedition medicine opportunities to further complement my knowledge and experience base."
