"Originally from Spain, I chose to come to Surrey to study Computing and Information Technology because I’ve always been interested in the sciences and I thought this programme looked really exciting. Surrey has a good reputation for graduate employability and I loved the campus environment.
The transition was pretty straightforward. I was thrilled to have the chance to start a new life in a different country, and I found it easy to settle in here. It was helpful for me to have lived in student halls for my first year – as it was easy to get to know other students and I knew where everything was, being based on campus already.
My favourite module was ‘Android Development’ – this enabled me to work on the latest technologies and develop a mobile game. It was exciting to be playing a game that I had created!
I spent my Professional Training year at Withers LLP in London, having first found the opportunity on the Surrey jobs database. Everyone at the company was welcoming and helpful and I learnt a bunch of stuff and, best of all, had a blast! On placement I was given the opportunity to work in areas outside my role too, and was given full responsibility for tasks – this really boosted my self-esteem. I participated in external training courses, and received certificates for these – which will help my CV.
There are plenty of opportunities at Surrey to pursue hobbies and interests and there are societies for literally everything, and events tailored to different tastes. I’m currently an Open Day helper and a Demonstrator for the Department of Computing.
Since starting the programme, I’ve become much more confident. The Professional Training year really lets you mature and learn how the world works. For anyone else considering a Computing degree, I’d say: be prepared to work hard and put in effort, and you’ll reap the rewards. I’d highly recommend Surrey to others. I’ve really liked being here – you get to meet people from different countries; the lecturers are motivational and really help you in your studies; and the ratings for graduate employability are strong."
