The student experience

The skills I learnt during my Professional Training placement year were invaluable when it came to writing my final-year dissertation.

Dr Doug Hodgson

BSc Microbiology (Medical)

"I chose to come to Surrey because it has a good reputation in the field of biological sciences and I enjoyed the talks given at the Open Day. I was also keen to take part in the Professional Training scheme, which allows you to work for a year within a scientific discipline and looks great on your CV.

I learnt a lot during the first two years of the course and felt well-prepared for my Professional Training placement year, which I spent at the UCL Cancer Institute.  I worked on a breast cancer screening project, optimising antibodies that were to be used to target biomarkers present on breast cancer. It was really rewarding and was the inspiration for me going on to study for a PhD. The University has an excellent careers department who helped me write my CV and perfect my interview technique so I could succeed in securing a suitable PhD position.

My favourite part of the programme was the final year research project. I enjoyed managing the experiments required to confirm the hypothesis, and the skills I learnt during my placement year were invaluable when it came to writing my final-year dissertation.

I’m now a post-doctoral Research Fellow, working on a project focused on producing significant power from microbial fuel cells, using waste from the production of valuable solvents from biomass.

This degree gives you the chance to find out where your interests lie, so is a great basis for a wide range of careers."
