Veterinary MicrobiologyWhat attracted you to choose the University of Surrey and to study your course here?
Having worked in practice for several years, I wanted to broaden my horizons and undertake further study in a subject I’ve always enjoyed. The course itself sounded really interesting, with a good mix of research, lectures and practicals. The ability to undertake my studies part time was essential, as I needed to work and earn money alongside the course. The course had real flexibility for those with other commitments.
What is your strongest memory of your time at Surrey?
I have such fond memories of the other students and staff members I met along the way, who I remain friends with still. Everyone came from very diverse backgrounds and had interesting stories to tell.
What were the best things about your course?
The MSc Veterinary Microbiology course is really diverse, you learn about all aspects of microbiology in a wide range of veterinary species. Because it’s modular, it works really well part time and you can spread out your studies as you need to
What do you do now and what do you find the most enjoyable about your line of work?
I recently started an academic role as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine, which is extremely rewarding. I enjoy lecturing and helping students on their path to becoming a vet.
How did your time at Surrey help you choose what career to go into?
The University are really supportive to their students, and provide opportunities to learn about the different career options available after graduating. I found I enjoyed giving presentations to my peers as part of the course, and the public speaking skills I developed have helped immensely with my current lecturing role.
What are your top tips for students aspiring to work in your profession?
Always keep your options open. It’s amazing how rewarding it is to try a different path.
