"I chose to study Computing and Information Technology at Surrey because of the University’s great reputation and good graduate employment record, its location close to London and its campus and facilities.
My four year course meant I was able to spend my Professional Training year at Yell Group (Yellow Pages) as a Business Improvement Analyst, which enabled me to gain valuable experience in different areas of a business. After roles in consulting and business analysis, I now work as a Business Advisor in the insight directorate for Sport England.
This role involves me working with national governing bodies such as The Football Association and the England and Wales Cricket Board, advising on using data to form actionable business insights to help increase regular participation in sports.
What I’ve found is that while it’s important to be academically strong, the softer skills are just as vital when you graduate and look for a job. Luckily the course I studied had a good mix of technical/computing modules and marketing and business skills which gave me a great foundation to succeed in any industry.
My advice to students would be to get involved in as many opportunities as possible, including societies and sports teams, which all help to develop you as a person. Employers look for people who are not just academically strong but will fit into a team and the organisation. I would highly recommend studying at the University of Surrey: you’ll get every opportunity to develop both academically and on a personal level."
