2014 Entrants

Bursaries and scholarships

We encourage applications from everyone with the ability to study for a Surrey degree, and understand that finance is a factor that affects most people’s decisions. We are committed to making sure that we offer support for students who might need it.

Our bursaries and scholarships are among the most competitive in the country, with both merit-based and means-tested awards available.

Surrey Bursaries

University of Surrey Bursaries are delivered in conjunction with the National Scholarship Programme (NSP).

In order to be eligible for a Surrey Bursary your household income must meet the criteria, you must be a UK or EU student and must be paying the full tuition fees (therefore NHS-funded students and students who are being funded are not eligible).

You must also have correctly filled out and submitted your application to Student Finance England/Student Finance European Team for a loan and must also make sure that you and your parent/guardian have given your consent to share the information with the University.

Please note that the terms and conditions of the NSP are subject to change and therefore our bursary schemes may change in order to meet these regulations. We currently anticipate offering the following to students commencing their studies at Surrey in 2014:

Full Surrey Award

Students with a household income of £25,000 or less will be eligible for a full Surrey award paid as follows:

First year of study

£2,300 accommodation discount for students living on campus (for those living off-campus the option of a £2,300 cash bursary available instead).

Second year of study

£1,000 cash bursary and a £1,000 tuition fee waiver

Each subsequent year of study

£1,000 cash bursary and a £2,000 tuition fee waiver.

If a professional training year is undertaken, the whole fee for that year will be waived. Continued eligibility of the Surrey Bursary is reliant on the student progressing normally on their programme.

Professional Training Year

Students are not eligible for the National Scholarship programme during the placement year. However, if the student has a household income of £25,000 or below they will be entitled to a full tuition fee waiver for that year, meaning that they will not be required to pay the tuition fees of £1100.

In order to confirm that you are eligible for the fee waiver the University needs to be able to check your household income using information that has been verified by Student Finance so please make sure that you apply to Student Finance for a tuition fee loan as normal and please make sure that you are means tested. Once the new academic year has begun we will contact you to let you know if you qualify for the fee waiver of £1100, so you should expect to hear from us about it at some point towards the end of October. If you qualify for the fee waiver the University will contact the Student Loans Company to let them know that you are no longer paying any tuition fees for the placement year and to tell them that you no longer need a tuition fee loan for that year. There is nothing that you need to do to sort this out yourself.

Please note: If you are eligible for a bursary in 2014/5 you will receive notification of this after you have arrived at the University and begun your studies. To be eligible for a bursary we need to have confirmation that you are in attendance, which is the reason we can’t confirm anything before you arrive, so you should expect to hear from us towards mid-October. If you are living in University accommodation we will deduct the bursary from your accommodation invoice AFTER we have sent you confirmation of your award.

Partial Surrey Award

Students with a household income of between £25,001 and £30,000 will qualify for a Partial Surrey Award paid as follows:

First year of study

£1,500 accommodation discount for students living on campus (for those living-off campus the option of a £1,500 cash bursary ).

Second year of study

£500 cash bursary and £500 tuition fee waiver

Each subsequent year of study (excluding the professional training year)

£500 cash bursary and £1,000 tuition fee waiver

Continued eligibility of the Surrey Bursary is reliant on the student progressing normally on their programme.

Care Leavers

The University of Surrey offers a guaranteed minimum bursary of £1,000 on entry to qualifying students who have been in local authority care. Eligible students will be under 25 years of age and will have been in care for at least 13 weeks after the age of 14.

It may be the case that the student qualifies for the main bursary entitlement under the NSP arrangements detailed above. Please note that in that case the student will receive the higher amount which includes the minimum £1,000. The £1,000 is not paid in additional to the NSP.

Discounts for Surrey Graduates

If you are a self-funded UK, EU or international student who has studied for an undergraduate degree at the University of Surrey campus in Guildford, you will be eligible for a 10% discount on our taught postgraduate Masters programme fees, with effect from September 2013. This scheme is applicable to 2014 Postgraduate Taught entry students.

Students graduating in the summer of 2014 are eligible, as well as alumni from previous years, on receipt of evidence of the award from Surrey and where we can identify that you actually studied in Guildford. Students from SII DUFE are eligible for this scheme.

Associated Institution students are not eligible. Not available to modular self-pacing students.

This scheme will be reviewed annually.

For eligible students, one third of the full tuition fees due for 2014/15 will have to be paid in order to enrol on your programme, then the 10% discount (based on the full fee amount for 2014/15) is deducted from the second and third instalments. This means the tuition fee invoice, that will be emailed to your University email account in October, will reflect the actual balance due.

If you have any enquiries regarding this matter please contact the Fees and Funding team at feesandfunding@surrey.ac.uk

Important
