Introduction to Economic Evaluation in Healthcare and Clinical Trials

Friday 20th January 2017, 9.00am to 4.30pm

This one day course is being offered as part of the 5 day Winter Informatics School (WiSH).  The final day of WiSH is available as a standalone session and will cover an introduction to health economic evaluation.  It will provide a practical understanding and application of some basic concepts in health economics and health research in clinical trials.  No previous knowledge of health economics is required.  A major focus of the course will be on cost-effectiveness analysis.  At the end of the course, attendees will be able to:

·        Appreciate why health economics is relevant for clinical research and clinical trials

·        Understand how costs are measured and collected

·        Understand how to interpret results from cost-effectiveness analyses

·        Appreciate how cost effectiveness fits into clinical trials, grant applications and influencing health policy decisions.

The course comprises several components:

·        Why economic evaluations are important in health research and clinical trials

·        Measuring and collecting health resource use (costs)

·        Relevant health outcomes for cost-effectiveness analysis

·        Approaches to cost-effectiveness (including cost-utility and QALYs) in health research and clinical trials

Each session will cover concepts, practical approaches and challenges. Case studies will be used to reinforce learning outcomes.
