About Employability and Careers

Our strong professional team in the Employability & Careers Centre works together to provide support to all Surrey students with careers guidance, information and vacancy services. Whether you are a first year, a final year undergraduate, a postgraduate, researcher or Alumni, we are here to help. We also provide support and careers advice for graduates who have completed their studies within the last three years.

Our services

We offer a wealth of individual careers advice and guidance including:

Director and Deputy Director

Keith Herrmann, Director of Employability & Careers 

Keith leads the Directorate of Employability and has a university-wide remit as strategic lead on employability, careers and the university’s renowned student placement programme. He works extensively with the academic community to ensure employability is a core element of the student learning journey. 

He is currently leading the team on a wide range of projects, including: a graduate attributes framework, a Surrey Employability Award, and a new IT platform for placements and employability. He is also involved in university-wide projects on learning gain, student resilience, and BAME students and social mobility in graduate recruitment. He is also the strategic lead for the University’s work on degree apprenticeships.

Keith is passionate about education, and pro bono convenes the Careers Alliance, a strategic leadership network of 25 national organisations in the UK with an interest in career guidance, including employer bodies, trade unions and education and skills organisations.

Laura Guild, PA to Keith Herrmann

Laura’s role is to manage the office of the Director of Employability and Careers in addition to supporting the effective administration processes and procedures of the Directorate.

Frances Gow, Deputy Director, Employability & Careers 

Frances has leadership and operational management responsibility for the Employability and Careers Centre, including; staff resourcing and development, quality review, departmental strategic planning, supporting and deputising for the Director of Employability and Careers. She is currently leading on a number of projects, including marketing and visibility of the service and a cross-university working group, looking at employability support for our international students.

Professional Training Placements

Michael Higgins, Professional Training and Employability Manager

Mike has management responsibility for the Professional Training Administration Team and also works with colleagues across the Employability and Careers Centre on other employability initiatives.

Stephanie Evans, Senior Professional Training and Employability Officer

Steph is responsible for supporting students through the placement year.  She leads a team co-ordinating all student placements for FHMS and FEPS.

Since 2007 Steph has been involved in Professional Training and the Employability and Careers of Undergraduate students, with a focus on building relationships and engaging with businesses that are looking to recruit high calibre placement students from the University of Surrey.

Kelly McCabe, Senior Professional Training and Employability Officer

Kelly is responsible for supporting students through the placement year.  She leads a team co-ordinating all student placements for FASS.               

Deborah Edwards, Professional Training and Employability Officer

Deborah is a member of the Professional Training team and helps organise student placements for FASS students.

Tom Yates, Professional Training and Employability Officer

Tom’s work focuses on the Professional Training Year, specialising in Psychology, Music and Bioscience placements. This role includes sourcing placements, student assistance and promotion of the Professional Training Year.

Rose Leek, Professional Training and Employability Officer

Rose supports students through a Professional Training placement year, working with the departments of Mechanical Engineering Sciences, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. Assisting students from initial information on placement opportunities to throughout their year in employment, Rose also supports placement industry days and liaises with a range of businesses looking to recruit University of Surrey placement students.

Melissa Pickering

Melissa is a member of the Professional Training team and helps organise student placements for FASS students.

Employer Engagement

Amy Molin, Employer Engagement Manager

Amy leads the Employer Engagement team to develop, build and maintain relationships with industry partners and to promote the University’s student talent to potential employers.

Diana Smirnova, Employer Engagement Officer

Diana works as part of the Employer Engagement team, and is responsible for managing the central employer events calendar (workshops, skills sessions). These events provide students with the opportunity to meet a varied range of employers while brushing up on key skills to help enhance their employability.

Sarah Bowden, Employer Engagement Officer

Sarah is responsible for organising the Summer & Autumn Careers Fair, as well as a range of other employer-led careers events.

Sophie Lloyd, Employer Engagement Administrator

Sophie deals with employer enquiries and provides events and admin support to the EE team. She is also responsible for organisation of some of the mini-fairs and faculty-specific careers events.

Careers Advisers

Careers Advisers for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught (UG/PGT) Students

Andrew Bennett

Andrew is the link Careers Adviser for students in the School of Economics, School of Law, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Surrey Business School.

Brendan Healy

Brendan supports students in the departments of Chemistry, Chemical & Process Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering Sciences and the Centre for Environmental Strategy.

Jeanette Holt

Jeanette is the link Careers Adviser for students in the School of Literature and Languages, School of Psychology and the Department of Politics.

Darren Johnson

Darren supports students in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physics, Criminology and Sociology.  Darren will also lead on Diversity and the development of an Employability Award (open to students of all levels).

Sharon Wright  

Works with Darren Johnson to assist in the delivery of the Employability Award to support and enhance the employability of Surrey students. Setting up and implementing the administrative processes for a framework to enable students to gain recognition for skills and employability development which feeds into their Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR).

Vicky Ransley

Vicky is the link Careers Adviser for the School of Biosciences and Medicine, School of Health Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, Guildford School of Acting, the Department of Music & Media, and Media, Culture & Society.

Careers Advisers for Postgraduate Researchers and Early Career Researchers (PGR/ECR)

Fiona Thie

Fiona works closely with the Doctoral College and Researcher Development Programme Team, supporting researchers from FASS and FEPS in deciding their career options, applying for jobs, and interview coaching.

Hayley Cordingley

Hayley works closely with the Doctoral College and Researcher Development Programme Team, to support doctoral researchers from FHMS and FEPS with their careers – exploring and deciding which career paths to follow; recognising and enhancing employability skills; making effective applications and succeeding at interviews.

Student Engagement

Lauren Leftley, Student Engagement Coordinator 

Lauren leads the Student Engagement team to raise awareness of the Employability and Careers resources and activities to students. This involves developing campaigns to promote the service using social media, outreach events and marketing materials. 

Pinar Mehmet

Pinar is responsible for providing a welcoming first point of contact to all visitors who enter the Employability and Careers Centre. Pinar is also responsible for engaging with students and marketing the centre at Welcome Week and Fresher’s fair.

Ros Earl, Student Engagement Assistant

Ros responsible for providing a welcoming first point of contact to all visitors who enter the Employability and Careers Centre. Ros is also responsible for engaging with students and marketing the centre at Welcome Week and Fresher’s fair.
