Support

Bespoke support is available to you in a variety of forms including: one-to-one appointments and "quick query" sessions; interactive workshops, employer networking events, alumni talks and online resources.

These 45 minute appointments are opportunities for you to meet one-to-one with one of our specialist careers advisers, to discuss and/or work on any topic you would like to (related to your career).  Themes that often arise are:

  • exploring career options
  • planning and taking the next career steps
  • completing application forms
  • writing CVs and cover letters
  • preparing for interviews
  • having a mock interview

Each client is entitled to four of these appointments within a six month period, and each must be booked in advance.  Face-to-face meetings are held in the ECC, but Skype or telephone meetings are also available where face-to-face is not possible.

To get the most from the appointment, send any relevant documents in before the meeting so the careers adviser can prepare and give you the best service.

To book an appointment, please visit the team in Employability and Careers, Philip Marchant Building or call the front desk on +44 (0)1483 689001.

These 20 minute sessions are suitable for the careers adviser to give you a quick review of documentation being prepared for an application e.g. a CV, application form or CV.

Appointments are booked on the day, and documents are brought to the meeting (no pre-work will be undertaken).

These sessions are currently available on Mondays and Thursdays between 2:00-3:00pm.

Sign-up opens at 1:30pm on the day (at the ECC front desk) and the sessions are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

These informal, interactive one hour workshops (usually held at lunchtime) are designed specifically for Post Graduate- and Early Career-Researchers: giving you basic information, tools and techniques to get you up and running with your job applications and career thoughts.

Each workshop focusses on a specific topic – currently:

See the training and activites area to see when they are scheduled and to sign up.

Do get in touch with Hayley Cordingley if there is an area you would like one of these “primer” workshops developed for!

These in-depth, interactive 90-120 minute workshops are designed specifically for Post Graduate- and Early Career-Researchers: giving you information, tools and techniques to identify your career options, make effective applications, and impress at interview.

See the training and activites area to see when they are scheduled and to sign up.

A series of inspirations talks is planned to roll out through the Autumn of 2017.

If you are interested in helping to organise/influence the nature of these talks, please get in touch with Hayley Cordingley.

We will be inviting people who used to be PGR students or early career researchers to come talk about:

  • the paths their careers have taken
  • what went to plan and what was unexpected
  • what is great (and perhaps not so great) about their current roles
  • what they know now that they wished they knew when they were where you are now
  • thier top 5 tips

There will be time for questions and answers and also an opportunity for networking at each event.

See the training and activites area to see when they are scheduled and to sign up.

As well as the support provided by the ECC, there are a number of other departments and services that can support you with your thoughts and investigations in different Career Smart areas:
