On the night of the Brexit referendum result in 2016, and in response to it, director Jaq Bessell and a group of actors and dancers from various regions of Italy formed a new company, Rebellious Subjects. The company’s mission is to develop new working methods which unite the disciplines of dance and acting, in performances which draw on a diverse range of European traditions, exceeding boundaries of form, discipline and language.
To date they have created bilingual productions of Shakespeare and adaptations of European classics (Romeo and Juliet, and The Envious Moon). Their latest project, an adaptation of Lorca’s Spanish classic drama Blood Wedding, sets the play in southern Italy and uses the pizzica and stornelli, and other traditional songs and dances from the region.
This is work in progress showing and will include a workshop to demonstrate some of the company’s working methods, and a discussion with the actors and dancers.
