The idea of resurrection makes a fissure in normal reality, in such a way that we can start to apprehend that a totally changed world might be possible, a world in which all belongs to all. The lecture will present poems, especially the Spanish civil war poems of César Vallejo, which express a secular, human notion of resurrection. We will discuss how poetry can oppose particular ways in which political oppression has reduced life to death; ‘Long live death’ was a fascist slogan in the Spanish civil war. We will also hear poems by Sean Bonney, Frances Kruk and Verity Spott which exemplify the courage to face out the deployment of death in present times as a form of social cruelty not only by the alt right and fascism but also by democratic states.
