SeNSS: South East Network for Social Sciences

Studentship Competition

The SeNSS DTP, funded by the ESRC is a centre of excellence in social science postgraduate research training, and is a partnership between the Universities of City, Essex, Goldsmiths, Kent, Reading, Roehampton, Royal Holloway, Surrey, Sussex and UEA.

At the University of Surrey, SeNSS offers ESRC studentships to top-quality research students wishing to study Economics; Hospitality and Tourism Management; Linguistics; International Development; Science, Technology and Sustainability or related multidisciplinary topics within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.


  • Open to Home and EU candidates; please see guidance on residency requirements outlined in the RCUK's Condtions of Research Council Training Grants
  • International candidates may be considered for funding in Economics only
  • Candidates without a Master’s degree can apply for funding to undertake a research training Master’s before starting their PhD where available (1+3 or 2+2 models).
  • Studentships will be awarded on the basis of the academic excellence of both the candidate and the research proposal.  This is an extremely competitive process and only very high calibre candidates will be successful

There are University of Surrey deadlines for SeNSS applicants before SeNSS’s own deadline.

The first step for all candidates is to approach their prospective academic school and supervisor.  Further information can be found from the School PGR Directors and SeNSS Pathway Intuitional Leads:

Please note that Science, Technology and Sustainability is not within FASS but is based within the Centre for Environmental Strategy

Please ensure that you have applied for a PhD at the University of Surrey by midnight on 18 December 2016.  

If selected to apply for a studentship, we will give you the link and access code for the SeNSS online application.  Then complete application form (including the Equal Opportunities form) and submit it online (with your transcripts) to by midnight on 16th January 2017.

You will also need a statement from your main supervisor and two references which your supervisor and referees will need to add to your application by 16th January.  If these are not included you will not be able to submit your application
