Alumnus support from America

We are pleased to announce that alumnus Surjit Chana has joined the US Friends of Surrey Board to help develop a new plan of activity and engagement with our graduates based in America.

Surjit, who graduated with a BSc in Physics in 1987, is a seasoned global executive who has held progressively senior management positions in the corporate sector and is currently a Harvard Fellow at the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative.

Previously, Surjit was the Chief Operations Officer (COO) & VP Strategy, IBM Digital and for over a decade, a member of IBM’s Global Senior Leadership Team. Over a 30-year career, Surjit has built extensive operations, strategy, business, marketing and sales skills in addition to his technology skills including patents for his work on transaction processing systems and artificial intelligence.

In his current role as a Harvard Fellow, he is looking at the cross sector (private, public and social) leadership skills and approaches needed to address societal challenges in climate change, health and education.

Chris Gethin, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, said: “Surjit will be a great edition to the Board and will help us create a more active programme. We already hold regular alumni gatherings in San Francisco, New York and Houston and look forward to more opportunities to connect with alumni.

“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, the support and engagement of our alumni is as valuable as ever in ensuring we lay the foundations for the next 50 years. Through the Chancellor’s 50th Anniversary Appeal, volunteering and acting as our ambassadors, alumni can play a real part in shaping our future.”

Surjit said “This is an amazing time for the University of Surrey with the recent appointment of Professor Lu as Vice-Chancellor and the 50th anniversary. I am honoured to be joining the Board and look forward to working with alumni, promoting the University to prospective students and helping to drive industry engagement in support of the new strategy for Surrey.”
