Course

Paramedic Science BSc (Hons)

Why I chose Surrey

I have always been fascinated by emergency medicine, but I tried a few different things before coming to Surrey – including running my own skateboarding company. When I decided to train for a career as a paramedic, Surrey felt like the perfect match for me. I was impressed by its league table rankings and coming from Cornwall, I like the fact Guildford is less than 40 minutes from London by train.

My course

On my BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science course, the tutors are great and I love being on placement, working alongside ambulance staff on the frontline, doing what I came on the course to do. You get the chance to meet people from all walks of life in different (and sometimes the strange) situations.

My clinical placements

For most of my clinical placements I’m based at a fairly large, busy ambulance station where there’s lots happening and new learning opportunities are always arising.

It’s great to work from a specific station because you become part of the team and get treated like a valued member of it. I’ve also had placements in hospitals including an A&E department, a stroke rehabilitation ward and a walk-in centre.

My career and development

Once I graduate I will be applying for a job within the ambulance service and hopefully I will be able to work my way up to becoming a critical care paramedic. I would also like to undertake a Masters qualification to further my knowledge of emergency medicine.
