"After finishing my physics degree at the University of Oslo in Norway I knew I wanted to move to England to study. I was interested in medical physics, and after doing some research I found the University of Surrey’s Euromasters degree in the subject.
I have always had a brain for science, but what I like best about medical physics is that it can be used to solve important issues. I like the way one has to think when applying physics to solve problems, and how I can see the results of my own research.
The academic staff at Surrey have been extremely friendly, helpful and professional. They always have time to answer questions and provide feedback. The quality of the lectures is very good, and they are always interesting. Medical physics includes both theoretical modules and lab sessions, so no two days are the same.
Throughout the year there are trips to museums and hospitals to see the application and history of the subject.
The department also arranges career talks and helps students find out what kind of jobs they can apply for after finishing the degree.
While living on campus I often used Surrey Sports Park, which is within walking distance from the University. The Sports Park has lots of different activities and is a great way to exercise while being a student.
I also used to go to the weekly vegetable market at the Students’ Union. This was a great way for me to get cheap, fresh vegetables. There are several nice cafes and restaurants on campus, where you can eat with friends after or in between classes.
I'm currently doing my nine-month research project at GE Healthcare. Doing my research project within a business has given me great work experience and is something I consider my greatest achievement so far.
While doing my research project, the University staff and in particular my supervisor have offered me lots of help and support, which I am grateful for.
I've learnt a lot from my research project. I've learnt to plan and perform my own research, to carry out analysis and to interpret results. It has also been a great opportunity to work in a team within a business and to be a part of a large research society."
