My Surrey experience - Emily Jeffreys, BSc Business Management

"I would definitely recommend a Professional Training placement. The individual learning and self-development you have to do is astonishing. You come back a more rounded, confident and better person."

"My main reason for attending Surrey was the fact it was my home University. I was excited about coming to Surrey due to their rise up the league tables and the opportunity to go out on a placement year. The Surrey Sports Park was fairly new too which again made the decision all the more appealing.

I went to an Open Day and a talk about the programme I wanted to do. Having heard the talk, I began to get excited about University and the challenges and fun I would have.

I like the wide variety of subjects we get to study, from financial maths and economics through to marketing and international business.

There are a lot of academic staff on my programme that I personally get on really well with and feel as though they care and genuinely want to help students.

I am part of the Netball Society and I really enjoy the social side of it and the friendships I have made. I joined in second year which allowed me to open my circle up and it made a dramatic difference to my life at University.

Being a Guildford girl I am biased, but I do love the town centre and the history it brings. I’m not sure many students fully explore the area and surrounding villages, but it has the right amount of hustle as well as countryside! I like the lakes and greenery on campus too!

On my Professional Training placement I went to Electronic Arts in Guildford as a Project Lifecycle Management Intern. Work involved setting the dates for upcoming titles that EA were working on as well as working with other departments to make sure serial codes and identification numbers corresponding to different countries were correct. A lot of attention to detail. Highlights really were the team and the people I worked with. It was such an amazing company both culturally and functionally. They made sure employees had fun whilst at work too which is really important to me.

I would definitely recommend a Professional Training placement. Not only is it a welcome break from studying, but the individual learning and self-development you have to do is astonishing. You really do come back a more rounded, confident and better person.

My greatest achievement during my time at Surrey so far would probably be getting 19/20 first’s in my modules so far at University. Personally speaking, my biggest achievement is how University has helped me become who I am now; being involved in the Netball Society and completing my Professional Training placement year have a lot to do with that."
